STR8 vs Gay Male RN

Published

Hey all,

I'm a 43 y/o first year nursing student and am wondering about the percentage of straight vs gay male nurses. I'm attending a very small college with six males in our class, one of whom is gay. Noone seems to care but I was wondering what the prevelance of gay male RN's is in the hospital setting, and is it a generally non-issue with other healthcare team workers?

So if you are gay I really don't care. What offends me are the unwelcome and inappropriate sexual advances (male or female) and the consequences of that behavior.

ITA. I also find sexual talk on the job offensive. Whether its coming from straights or gays, I'm not interested in hearing about sexual exploits. If someone is a good nurse, does their job and is respectful of others we'll get on just fine and dandy.

Amen! My sentiments exactly.

I dont understand why alot of male nurses are gay. Maybe its genetic or something. Myself , im heterosexual and a hard line Republican.

Patrick - in my experience (well over 20 years worth), most of the guys I worked with that were nurses were in fact, not gay. Many of the guys I worked with got into nursing as a career change because of downsizing with their "other" career.

I think a lot of men are beginning to realize that nursing as a career is a great choice because of the diversity it offers and the opportunities available.

No matter how it looks, nurses that happen to be male only make up 6% of the total nursing workforce. Pretty low given the mere numbers of nurses in this country.

To answer the first question my response is:

For me the issue is only relevant when I am mistaken for a gay male and people act on that mistaken assumption. I had only been approached for sex by another male twice in my life before I entered nursing. While in nursing school both my male nursing professors solicited me for sex (one professor backed off when I declined and one remained persistent until I graduated). I also had a male nurse manager approach me for sex in exchange for a favorable recommendation for a promotion. When I reported this to my "chain of command" (all female) I was not taken seriously and was made to feel like a total idiot for reporting the incident. I could go on but I think I have made my point.

So if you are gay I really don't care. What offends me are the unwelcome and inappropriate sexual advances (male or female) and the consequences of that behavior.

Well now you know what it's like being a gay woman in a straight world. Sucks doesn't it? I'm tired of having straight men think I like them just because I give them the time of day.

I think you completely misunderstood my post. Firstly, I never said it was right, and secondly I was trying to show that no matter who perpetrates the sexual harrassment, it still sucks. It's a myth that gay people try to "recruit" straights and I always hear the "well they can be gay as long as they don't come near me" debate, but on the other side of the coin, as a gay female, I've had heterosexual males try to "recruit" me many times, and it's just as disrespectful and just as unpleasant.

Okay, then please forgive my jaded response. I think ANY unwelcome sexual advances are wrong and yes I can understand your frustration as well.

What is the answer then? Do we ignore the problem, try to educate others on the issue or try to survive the best we can in a world that doesn't quite make sense sometimes?

In any case I wish you well and may you find happiness and joy in all your edeavors.

Thank you HBS. I don't think anyone should ignore it, and that sexual advances at work should not be allowed to happen. There should be stringent sexual harrassment laws at work and should be strictly enforced. However, they should be clearly defined, because my partner got in trouble under those same laws just because she mentioned me at work and called me her partner. Someone took offence and complained that they didn't want to hear about gay people so took it to HR. That was unfair and uncalled for in my opinion, because all the other staff are able to talk about their husbands, so why shouldn't we be able to do the same thing. Anyway, in answer to what you said, people should be prepared to make a stand about unwanted sexual advances.

I've gone off topic here, but I shall say that in England where I come from, most of the male nurses I worked with were gay, but lately there have been a lot of straight males usually from the Phillipines, and I have found them to be excellent nurses with wonderful characters. I think the financial rewards of the job are making it a more attractive options for different people. Now I work in Phoenix AZ, and I only know one gay male and he is the unit secretary. There is one gay female RT, but I don't know of any others.

and worlked in about 30 different places. knew of one male nurse that was gay and here is a giggle for you his name was Butch. Great Nurse and excelent friend.

It a non issue really one post I read here sums it up for me .."I dont care I just need good Nurses."

I truly believe I have meet more gay women than men but thats probably a stretch however statistacaly it might be plausable..

Who said a lot of them were gay? I have yet to run into another queer male in school.

With all of the *real* issuses nursing is facing today, I'll just say that the poster is in for a rude awakening if he/she is spending time wondering if gay guys are good nurses.

And SJoe, RE: 16.8%, ROFLMAO.
