STR8 vs Gay Male RN

Published

Hey all,

I'm a 43 y/o first year nursing student and am wondering about the percentage of straight vs gay male nurses. I'm attending a very small college with six males in our class, one of whom is gay. Noone seems to care but I was wondering what the prevelance of gay male RN's is in the hospital setting, and is it a generally non-issue with other healthcare team workers?

HBScott,

I am also feeling that anger you describe. I am not yet an RN, but another tech made unwelcome advances to me, and then SHOVED me!!! I reported it to our manager and security was involved. I did not file an official compliant (which in retrospect I would have done) since I knew I was quiting anyway (b/c school). If this incident had happened outside of work, this idiot would have gotten 'Mace' and a groin kick (sorry guys). In this facility techs were treated like garbage and I honestly felt like I was "creating a problem." I've always been outspoken about sexual harrassment in general, so not only am I angry at this low class loser, I'm mad at myself for not storming HR, etc. In my case it has made me want to graduate more and more b/c i know this person will then be working under me and I'll have more clout. But in any context unwelcome harassment/violence is infuriating especially if not taken seriously. I am sorry for what has happened to you.

sincerely j.

Maybe i have issues... so what, but when i see a male nurse with a multitude of feminine gestures it sorta gets under my skin a little bit. When i was in nursing school , i was dancing with a girl at a college club and when she found out my major.. she asked me.. ARE YOU GAY ? Well no i told her.. Im entitled to my opinion but it urks me the wrong way I guess..

have a nice day

Yeah, I get the same feeling when a group of str8 guys are at a tailgate party, drunk, yelling "ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL".

I guess I have issues too, if I'm honest.

I welcome any conscientious, competent, hard-working person as a nurse.

True enough but it isn't the conscientious, competent, hard-working nurses that have been the source of grief for so many.

"Bad Nurses" come in all genders, colors, shapes, sizes and ideological persuasions. And I might add that is certainly true for people in general.

It just took me a while to get over my false assumption that nurses (generally speaking) were different from the rest of us. I was grievously reminded that even nurses can be guilty of the same behavior that contribute to larger societal ills.

Iwould like to go on record as saying:

I welcome any conscientious, competent, hard-working person as a nurse.

Sexual orientation does not matter

Transexuality (a hot issue in another thread) does not matter

Male/female does not matter

Race does not matter

Religious preference does not matter

As long as you are caring, and somewhat NON-harshly judgemental, I want you by my side or caring for my loved ones. That is what should matter to us all.

In a perfect world by all means. Today what the CUSTOMER wants in nursing is what gets paid attention to.

Why does it matter? When push comes to shove, I don't give a r _ _ 's a_s if the guy or gal on my team is gay or str8 as long I can depend on them and they on me. At the end of the day, who you sleep with doesn't make a bit of difference, it's the kind of nurse you are that I really care about. You do not indicate if you are male, female, gay or str8, but take a hard look at the reason you asked this question and make sure you understand that in the medical profession (nursing included) WE/THEY are every where, maybe even in your family or church!! (oh my God!)

You never know. some day you may be a paitent with a gay nurse!

Now let me say, I am so sick to death of this division / label.

Evey one, put on your neon name tag /sign so those who it makes a difference to can know your sexual preference.

pmanrnbflo, I checked with my wife, and she's pretty firmly of the opinion that it DOES make a difference who I sleep with at the end of the day. :chuckle

Shouldn't you be thinkin about handwashing and care plans right about now? Geeze Louise...or Louie..or...Polyanna....We as nurses are supposed to be the utmost gracious hosts to all humans and their malady..Who gives a rat's glute if anyone male or female is whatever they may be? You need to stop concentrating on whatever that silly issue is about, and get going on your DSMIV reading! As for me, if your wearing a "nurse" tag, that's the only tag I'm caring about....gitcha coffee and git on the floor! :kiss Scrubs

As a student nurse {male} second career . I was thinking will people think I'm gay ? My wife and daughter think so . However, I grew up in the Keys where they who gives a S#it . It seems to me alot of nurses must be from there also

I concur; My wife and kids think I'm queer any way but in the long run who gives a toss so long as the work is up to standard.

Just for the record I will repeat myself from another thread..:angryfire

I am not a "Male Nurse"

I am a Registered Nurse who happens to be male.
