  1. :roll If your talking about a vocational school your talking about going to LPN school to be a LPN. That is all good and fine but to be honest you could get your associates degree in Nursing at a community college or some university and become a RN.... a typical LPN program is anywhere from 1 yr to 2 yrs in length.. They get a raw deal in my opinion, they do almost the same work that us RNs do and they get paid much less.. Im not hear to debate what LPNs do or dont do but thats the facts... You are better off getting into a 2 yr RN program and then work and then slowly work on getting your BSN.. Hospitals dont really care if you have your 2 or 4 yr RN degree starting out.. you can bank on that also.. the pay of a RN is far better than a LPN also .. Good luck in your career.. Email me at [email protected] if you have any specific questions.. Nursing is a good field to get into
  2. Marian (not Marion) college in Indianapolis has a BSN program for students who hold a bachelors degree already, i would recommend Marian college any day over IU anything related to nursing... I was in the RN to BSN program and It rated well with me.. They didnt treat me like an idiot and the classes were enjoyable esp the liberal arts classes.. the required nursing classes such as stats, patho, health assestment are pretty much a review of everything you already know.. except for stats.. i had to work hard for that A.. Dont let the cost of Marian college scare you away.. you do come graduate from the college as a better nurse, a better educated person and that makes for a better citizen. Unlike IU that makes you feel like your a cow in a herd of other cows trying to get you degree.... Its also ROman Catholic based so you have to study Christian Theology and it does give you an understanding of Chritianity better.. im roman catholic and i enjoyed the fact that going to marian college also made me a better christian.. well that my opinion anyway..
  3. ok so you want to know about basic training.. Its a lot of fun, you get to learn how to be a soldier and you get to learn the basic fundamental skills of being a soldier like marching, doing alot of army workouts, alot of basic combat training skills with the basic weapon systems and alot of rifle marksmenship and alot of pushups. The drill Sgts will be in your face screaming at you breaking you down first till it hurts and after a couple of weeks they will build you up. You learn and learn and relearn all the basic common tasks that a new soldier needs to know in order to make it on the battlefield. Basic teaches the basics in other words 91w school teaches the fundamental medical/trauma skills that a medic needs to know in order to treat patients on the battlefield and in the clinical setting. remember that it is a building block, if you have a good NCO Medic, he or she will improve upon your training as will a good MD or RN or PA...
  4. Because of the increased deployments and acuity of patients that medics have to work on in these areas, the army has increased the length of time it takes to be a medic. the AIT training at Fort Sam in Texas was increased by a couple of weeks and the lectures and the clinical labs are reflected also. In addition the Army combined the two MOSs of 91B medical specialist and 91C practical nurse in the new MOS 91w Healthcare Tech. The practical nursing program at Ft Sam is still open but now if you have a LPN/LVN license it you will still be considered a 91W with an additional skill Identifier.. Myself im sorta different though, I work in the army national guard as a 91W and i was on active duty as a medic also before i got into the Guards, but on the civillian side of the world i have my RN, BSN but i chose to stay enlisted. If you have any questions at all email me at [email protected] I was active duty for 6 yrs and been in the reserves for 7 yrs so i know alittle about whats going on the military.,, Hope that helps Patrick thibeault RN, BSN
  5. Maybe i have issues... so what, but when i see a male nurse with a multitude of feminine gestures it sorta gets under my skin a little bit. When i was in nursing school , i was dancing with a girl at a college club and when she found out my major.. she asked me.. ARE YOU GAY ? Well no i told her.. Im entitled to my opinion but it urks me the wrong way I guess.. have a nice day
  6. I think the reason i got into health care as a paratrooper/flight medic in the army is that i wanted to be the medic... i wanted to help people who were hurt. I continued to do this as a RN and continue to advance my care of people. being real though, the low down on nursing is as follows: Hard work, patients cussing at you for you trying to do your job. but also it has its good sides to it also. you make a difference in someones life. you get to help people out. the pay isnt that bad either. people need your help.
  7. a nurse just doesnt give patients pills and IV drugs. A nurse must have a continuing and ever building foundation of the sciences. The basic chemistry classes that I had to take served as a foundation for the ongoing knowledge that i acquire. To be blunt, im more than a techical nurse who just does what he ordered to do and with the education in these non nursing classes it gives me insight into doing what rights for the patient and saving the the MD from writting a bad order. SOme people refer to these classes as weed out classes, and thats a good thing, I want a nurse who is good with numbers that can understand abstract thoughts as these. After all it is a bachelors or associates of SCIENCE in nursing... its not a arts degree. but remember nursing is both an art and a science..
  8. Ive talked with nursing students and alot of them have alot of misconceptions about the profession. Im going to lay it all down here... If you want to become a nurse, dont waste your time becoming a LPN or a medical assistant. Both are underpaid jobs and you cant do alot and you are not allowed to think for yourself. Contrary to what LPNs say or think, they lack the knowledge that RNs have and dont have the clinical know how that a RN learns. I dont care if you ve been a LPN for 20 years, there are things that the LPNs just dont pick up on. If you are getting into nursing, it shouldnt be for the money. You should have the drive to make patients lives better. Get into business world if you want to make money. Nurses do make good money though. Another thing is that these nurses with a BSN think that they are going to get into administration right away and not do anything else. I experienced future BSN nurses with this attitude in my RN to BSN completion program. well good luck
  9. I dont understand why alot of male nurses are gay. Maybe its genetic or something. Myself , im heterosexual and a hard line Republican.
