Stop bashing men, please

Nurses General Nursing

Published

We see posts that discuss the problems men face with garnering respect in nursing, and then we occassionally see posts that bash men in general. Men use the allnurses.com board, too. People come here not just for friendly chat, but also because it's a professional resource & offers support.

How would you feel if someone posted jokes or stereotypes that bashed women? It may be seen as humorous to a few or even many, but that doesn't make it appropriate or compassionate. I don't think the argument that nurses are "mostly women" makes it correct. These kinds of jokes hurt people.

And I didn't mean to stir controversy or make anyone feel bad -- I just think we need to realize that we have a greater impact on other people than we realize, even though we're all anonymous & the board has a huge social component.

Here's the thread about this topic we had back in December. Remembering my stance back then I feel like a hippocrit now.

I totally agree with you, but this post should be put on the male forum as well in regards to women because they do a little bit of bashing too. Here's an example:

I think it's post #50....mind you the poster is giving good advice, but using the stereotype he uses is unneccessary.

Bottom line is WE ALL could be a little bit kinder.....

Gosh - sometimes a joke is just a joke. This is one thing I dislike about nursing. Why does everyone have to take everything so seriously all the time. I would never willingly offend someone or hurt their feelings, but sometimes you do just need to laugh. You can make jokes at my expense, and if it is funny I will laugh with you. Yes, there are some borders that should not be crossed and these can be different for different people so it can be difficult, but if it is obviously not meant in a mean way then why can't we all just enjoy a joke as a joke. Why must everything be so politically correct, life and death serious all the time. I think we should be professional in our demeanor, but this is also a place to relax, enjoy, and lighten the load. If I have ticked anyone off I am sorry.

just wanted to say that I did not read the whole thread, so I don't know about the joke Crunch is referring to. I based my comments solely off of the 1st post, which was we should stop male-bashing and stereotyping the men....

Tweety, sometimes we update our thinking and assumptions.

YOU ARE FAR FROM A HYPOCRITE!!!!

Sheesh such ado...about what? A less than PC joke. I would never make fun of handicapped people---I missed that comment. But poking fun at gender differences does not disturb me, as long as it's all in good fun, not meant to marginalize or hurt anyone.

And I can't imagine YOU hurting anyone deliberately, Tweety. Will you please let yourself off the hook?????

And can we all get a sense of humor please? Here, Let's start a thread about redheads and have some fun....anyone got a good redhead joke? I can take it.

I don't notice any men bashing. Just jokes....and they're jokes, that's all.

My wife says men need bashing, that way they feel loved and worthy. Its good for them to be bashed.

I know every redhead joke there is. Ive been married to one for 30 years. Im just not brave enough to repeat them or she will hurt me. Everytime she gets mad at me, she buys Jewelry. Im not talking walmart or service merchandise, she buys the good stuff.

It may not be obvious, but I love a good joke. In fact, I love a bad joke. I've heard it said that humor is a defense mechanism, and I think there's a lot of truth in that. Life would kill you, if it wasn't so darned funny.

Like many others who've already posted, I see a difference between hate speech and affectionate teasing. A young woman I work with often e-mails me "male-bashing" jokes, and a lot of them are hilarious. Reading them doesn't make me feel like she hates me. I looked up the laxative thread, and some of it was cute. The "anti-female" jokes on this thread were cute. Fart jokes are funny, I don't care who you are.

Tweety, I accept it as a given that you like men. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I didn't find your jokes offensive, and wouldn't have if a woman had posted them.

I would also offer the modest suggestion that perhaps we could all agree to interpret the terms of service a little more loosely in the Break Room than in the other forums, which I find consistent with real life. I hear jokes in the break room that I wouldn't tell, but it wouldn't be nearly as funny if a patient or visitor heard them.

If you're offended by my male jokes, you have a right to your feelings.

I apologize for any offense.

Gender jokes are sexist and wrong. I'm usually more aware and don't post or respond to such things. Someone posted on the message board in my nursing research class, and it was a female and I laughed and enjoyed it.

For the record I'm a man. Tweety is my pet name my spouse calls me.

I don't worry to much about jokes. But I'm the first to shoot down anyone who says nurses are catty because it's a female-dominated profession. Or the problems in nurses are because there are so many females. Or the first to point out someone's stereotyping. So I certainly don't mind someone pointing out my own.

Frankly, I see a whole lot more female bashing (most of them by females themselves) than male bashing.

That said. I pity the person that reads one offensive joke on the bulletin board and judges the entire BB because one person, or judges the nursing profession. Sounds a bit far fetched, but anything is possible. . I'd be more worried about the nursing profession reading the recent thread about the weeding out instructors, or any other number of threads. But to each his/her own I guess.

Thanks!

Tweety, I just wanted to say that I thought your "Men are like laxatives" jokes were really great!!!! Many of them fit my husband!!! :) And he thought they were awesome too. :chuckle
