Stop bashing men, please

We see posts that discuss the problems men face with garnering respect in nursing, and then we occassionally see posts that bash men in general. Men use the allnurses.com board, too. People come here not just for friendly chat, but also because it's a professional resource & offers support.

How would you feel if someone posted jokes or stereotypes that bashed women? It may be seen as humorous to a few or even many, but that doesn't make it appropriate or compassionate. I don't think the argument that nurses are "mostly women" makes it correct. These kinds of jokes hurt people.

And I didn't mean to stir controversy or make anyone feel bad -- I just think we need to realize that we have a greater impact on other people than we realize, even though we're all anonymous & the board has a huge social component.

What do you mean "if"? There are probably a thousand posts on this bb talking about how women are catty and that's why nursing is in the bad state it is. We're catty, gossippy, unassertive, passive aggressive man haters....blah blah blah... There is also a lot that could be seen as anti-religious, anti-conservative, anti-liberal, anti-homosexual, anti-foreigner etc.

I personally enjoy the jokes by both male and female. It doesn't mean I am sexist or against a certain gender. I do however understand your standpoint and your feelings are welcomed. I don't think anyone has met any harm in their posts recent or old. For one, they'd be flamed and secondly the post would more than likely be taken off. Having said that, everyone who enjoys them in a harmless way should continue to enjoy them, while those who do not might opt to move on to another post or simply report it to the administrator to be checked out. I might be wrong for feeling the way I do but I am just being honest and sharing my humble opinion. :)

I don't think the OP was trying to stir up such a bruhaha....

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion - that's the way our society has been for a long time. No one is trying to squelch that. But in defense of the OP, it does seem that men "in general" are being slammed these days for being stupid, lazy, slobs, bad dads, idiot husbands, etc... This stereotype seems to be perpetuated nonstop on tv, and even when I go to class. If I had a dollar for every comment I hear at class each day about how my classmates can't stand their husbands, complaining about this or that screw-up he committed....I wouldn't have to work as an RN!! Thank goodness for one classmate that always leans over to me and says, "Not all men are as bad as they make them seem."

So, not trying to stir up the pot anymore, but let's give some credit to the guys who go against the sterotype and are stellar dads, boyfriends, husbands, sons, partners, and friends! :)

There is enough censorship in the world and on this bb IMO. And yes, I think a sense of humour is a good thing sometimes.

The sad part is, most humour requires that someone or something is usually made fun of.

Which is why I mostly avoid that problem by making fun of myself

I agree, and I thought about changing it but didn't know what to put, so I left as I found it. I'm hoping they mean "mentally handicapped".
