stomach contents in my eye and mouth!

Published

I was admin meds via G-tube yesterday when the second "plug" came loose and it all sprayed directly in my face...most in my left eye and my mouth UGH UGH. I had to take out my contact lense because it was stuck to my eyeball, flush it out with NS and wash my face. The worst part is he is MRSA positive around G-tube. I filed an incident report, but Im still disgusted about the entire episode. Anyone else had this happen?

ew... i feel sick now...

Yep that sucks!! However all part of the job. When I was orienting to ICU I was helping clean up a C-Diff patient and when we rolled her to her side and I started to clean she coughed and splattered me all across the chest with C- Diff poo. I'm sure the look on my face was priceless as all the other nurses in the room had to hold back their giggles. The kicker was that after I got myself all cleaned off I later realized it was dripping off my name badge. Another time I was helping with a trach patient and he coughed and a huge mucous plug went flying by me head...but that was a near miss thank God.

I'm sure it will happen again sometime....devastating now great story later.:D

the patient vomited....Yup, right into me! Sigh.....so I just spit it all out, wiped her mouth and mine, and continued CPR until the only other nurse in the nine bedded unit could come over to help me, along with the medical second year who was on call that night.

I lived. Unfortunately, that patient didn't.

When I took my CPR class they told us if you ever had to perform it out in the field in a true emergency, that this could happen.

He was a realist...he said, "...and if you throw up right behind it...it's ok...that's part of it."

same exact incident happened to me in school i was giving a meds to a man via his g-tube, and he coughed mind you this was a very very big fellow so his cough was a huge big bellow...he was also a mrsa patient so needless to say you can just imagine..i had his stomach contents in my eyes, face, and neck. i just made sure he was fine and ran to notify my supervisor. we had to rinse my eyes out with saline and hope for the best... after that i wore my glasses when doing the g-tube.

No, but once I had a colostomy bag empty on my lap. That was horrifying!

I think the worst I've had is a patient vomit down the back of my legs when I was emptying the catheter bag of the patient next door.

It was that warm stickyness that did it trickling into my shoes

Ewwww, I've gone off my chocolate now

I got squirted in the eye with g-tube contents when I first started my job-several times. I think I even posted about it (probably a year ago) remember feeling like I was going to cry and run out the door, lol. Now I just always hold the second port, and try to warn the newer nurses.

I know it has been awhile since this happened to you. But 2 years after having body fluids with MRSA in it , went into my eyes, I came up with MRSA in my eyes. Please get cultured by an eye Dr. Would love to know what your hospital did for you Mine told me to wash my eyes out again ..

All glamour, all the time.
