Can we start with grammer, speling, and punctiation?
I am amazed at the number of postings in here that assault the written English language. I am not referring to perfection, Lord knows I make plenty of mistakes myself. I am definitely not referring to those who's first language is not English. I am speaking to the outright ignoring of the basics.
It doesn't take but a second to capitalize your "I's." Really it doesn't.
Perhaps I am just old, cranky, and out of touch with the texting generation.
But when i c posts with run on sentencis multiple mispels lack of punctuation like apostophes in conjuctions im wonderin if u r able 2 c what im saying lol i mean. omg. we look like illiterit.
:)
P.S. to Grammar Nazis here, yes the wored "conjunction' was on purpos.
it seems that many of the young on this site are seeing the young being "gone after" when there is no such thing. as one of the so-called "aged" on this site, i do realize i was young once. i even remember it. i think most of us do.
since the original post sweetpei responded to with this comment was mine, i will respond. i am not young. i am nearly 34 years old and i, in no way, intended to imply that the original post was an attack on younger or newer rns.
i meant simply what i said: this is not a profession. it just isn't. it isn't realistic to assert that a job where the minimum barrier to be called a nurse is an lpn training program that you finish in a year at technical school is a profession. it isn't.
i think its sad and grasping at straws to suggest that text speak somehow detracts from our "profession." further, the more we grasp at these ridiculous peripheral issues, the more ridiculous and unprofessional we look as a group. (this is what sweetpei picked up on originally.)
i certainly see notes written in charts by all manner of healthcare workers that are full of typographical and spelling errors. some of these errors are attributable to a lack of education or poor educational background in a particular subject area and some of them are simply lazy typing. i try not to judge and if i can't understand someone's text speak, i simply clarify it or ignore the post.
I must agree... if u (you) are referring to the tit for tat going on here. Its (it's) disgusting. I just don't like when people have a problem and go after one group of people when there are many groups who do the same. Don't they realize they were once young too?
Fixed it for you (in bold). :)
This is not "tit for tat" nor aimed at any specific age group, and while (experientially speaking only) I do notice the lack of attention to grammar and punctuation comes from the younger set, this is not about singling out an age-demographic.
And yes, I was young(er) once.
Even in my late teens and twenties however, I realized that to have better odds in my profession and to represent it well, I would be better off to take a little effort in using effective communication techniques.
That's the way it is, and it's the same as it was ten or twenty years ago.
Now just for fun, let's read my post above without paying attention to punctuation, grammar, and simple capitalization:

See the difference? One example looks like there was at least a little attention to what was writtten, the second example looking more like a fifteen year old wrote it.
Or how about we start with some decency in how we treat other individuals? How about we build each other up and give constructive criticism instead of tearing each other down?
Sorry, I've had a really bad day. My first clinical instructor lacked professionalism, honesty, and integrity...thankfully, I have found that not all nurses are unprofessional! My present clinical instructor is wonderful.
Your response only shows that you are aged but not mature. Thanks for UR correction but I purposely wrote incorrectly. Now do me a favor and go edit the rest of my posts. If you feel UR job is to go after each word a person posts, perhaps you should get a job on that kind of site and leave nursing to people who TRULY care about other people
I wonder how well this holds up in court. In my LPN program, good writing and charting skills were practically beaten into us. If a physician or nurse ends up in court and their charting lacks basic English skills, how seriously do you think they will be taken? Can you honestly tell me that these errors won't effect the perception of their clinical practice?I certainly see notes written in charts by all manner of healthcare workers that are full of typographical and spelling errors. Some of these errors are attributable to a lack of education or poor educational background in a particular subject area and some of them are simply lazy typing.
I don't get my panties in a bunch over text speak....heck most of our shift summaries are full of 'medical ease' abbreviations ect........its not very different, for example here is a typical end of shift note.
shift summary. Pt had Lap BSO on 1/19. Incision site, CDI. hypoactive bowels, + flatus. VSS on RA, Tele in SR. rating pain 2/10. adequately controlled on oral narcotics. no other issues. anticipated d/c 1/21.
translated for anyone who doesn't speak nurse ease fluently.
Shift summary : Pt had a laprascopic bilateral salpingo oopherectomy on january 19th. Incision dressings are clean dry and intact. Pt has hypo-active bowel sounds but is passing gas. Patients vital signs are stable on room air. Pt is on telemetry and is currently in sinus rhythm. Pt is currently rating pain at a 2 on a scale of 10. Pt's pain is being managed with vicodin. We anticipate the patient will be discharged on January 19th.

You just about made me spew half chewed gummy bear. That's hilarious.
I absolutely agree with you. I see text speak and other serious grammar errors and I automatically think "moron that I would not trust with a patient." Sorry, but that's how it is.
Just so I can be equal opportunity here--text speak and grammatical errors make me think "moron" in other contexts as well, not just here on AN.
