So we want to be respected as educated professionals?

Can we start with grammer, speling, and punctiation?

I am amazed at the number of postings in here that assault the written English language. I am not referring to perfection, Lord knows I make plenty of mistakes myself. I am definitely not referring to those who's first language is not English. I am speaking to the outright ignoring of the basics.

It doesn't take but a second to capitalize your "I's." Really it doesn't.

Perhaps I am just old, cranky, and out of touch with the texting generation.

But when i c posts with run on sentencis multiple mispels lack of punctuation like apostophes in conjuctions im wonderin if u r able 2 c what im saying lol i mean. omg. we look like illiterit.

:)

P.S. to Grammar Nazis here, yes the wored "conjunction' was on purpos.

Seriously? Who told you this was an "educated profession"?It's obviously not as far as I can tell.

no,

i iz to smart to use spehl check. skewl taught me good, y'ahl.

i iz geenius.

respecht mah awsomness.

Funny thing is it is not just "text speak". I saw a post the other day and the person kept saying "of coorifice". This was repeated several times in the post. It may seem like nit picking but it really does look unprofessional when basic spelling rules are ignored.

I must agree... if u are referring to the tit for tat going on here. Its disgusting. I just don't like when people have a problem and go after one group of people when there are many groups who do the same. Don't they realize they were once young too?

i must agree with peepnbiscuitsrn...

if you are going to complain about the way people are writing on this site, then you should address it generally. please do not single out young nurses. it does not at all show integrity. it makes it look like you have something against young nurses....... i am constantly surrounded by old, middle aged, and young nurses who refuse to write, or speak, for that matter, in a way that is legible/audible. aged nurses are not automatically literate!!!!!!!!!!!

the original post did not single out young nurses. it was about the lack of grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling in some of the posts on this site. only in the last paragraph was any one group singled out, and that was in the context of texting and "textspeak." if one is complaining about the use of "textspeak", it seems logical to direct that particular complaint to those who text.

please do not perpetuate agism.

Taking the miniscule amount of time required to use a few punctuation marks and correct grammar to the best of our ability, floats all of our boats a bit higher. :)

the above statement implies the writers are cognizant of their mistakes, and could correct them accordingly.

if they are not aware of their errors, then that is what makes this entire gripe irrefutable.

the best part about being in a forum like this is that we can let our hair down. this is not to be a professional conference with everyone expecting u to dot every i and cross every t. i thought this was a place for nurses to get together, speak, listen, and understand. i thought that we as nurses were taught to be culturally considerate. right now we are in a culture where text speak is not only understood but it is used regularly. so either we change with the times, or we complain that we can't understand.

imagine if ye nurses spake in the english of thou forefathers. hmmmm

this is a forum made up largely of professionals and those who aspire to the profession of nursing. "text speak" is understood and used regularly by those who regularly text, it is by no means universally used and understood among the population of health care professionals. it is also contrary to the terms of service of this website.

it is quite alright if you disagree with me. yes, the younger generation is more apt to write in text style, but that does not make them the only group who does it. you said you've noticed this much more amongst the young... i don't think that qualifies as all of the young... furthermore, when a portion of those who are supposed to be part of the educated demographic lashes out on another part of the educated demographic, that too lowers the common denominator of us all. my point is: if a complaint is to be made about some action that is being performed by people on this site, please do it generally. unless you go through everyone's profile and look up their age, it is wrong for the complaint to be made only of young nurses. that's my point. disagree if you must

the complaint was made generally to all who use text style to post on this forum.

it seems that many of the young on this site are seeing the young being "gone after" when there is no such thing. as one of the so-called "aged" on this site, i do realize i was young once. i even remember it. i think most of us do.

Ruby Bee,Please read all posts before saying young was not mentioned. Furthermore, the original person of this post has replied to me justifying the post by saying that they find its mostly young people. I do read before I respondThank you

precisely...and it is not nit-picking.

we are not talking about typos

we are not talking about this being a forum, therefore, 'casual attire' only.

we are talking about misspelled words because of not applying fundamental principles of english.

and whether we find fair or not, every one of us forms first impressions of others.

it doesn't matter if it's they way one dresses, the way one talks, or the one way writes...

people form opinions.

and as a nurse, it bothers me, because this perceived deficiency reflects on all of us.

i personally find it important to always aspire to high standards.

this applies personally as well as professionally.

it's difficult to have self-respect, without them.:twocents:

eta: are we talking about text-speak only...

or the overall deterioration of reading/writing?

And by the way... Those who text are of all ages. What group are you referring to? I will silently guess
