So we want to be respected as educated professionals?

Can we start with grammer, speling, and punctiation?

I am amazed at the number of postings in here that assault the written English language. I am not referring to perfection, Lord knows I make plenty of mistakes myself. I am definitely not referring to those who's first language is not English. I am speaking to the outright ignoring of the basics.

It doesn't take but a second to capitalize your "I's." Really it doesn't.

Perhaps I am just old, cranky, and out of touch with the texting generation.

But when i c posts with run on sentencis multiple mispels lack of punctuation like apostophes in conjuctions im wonderin if u r able 2 c what im saying lol i mean. omg. we look like illiterit.

:)

P.S. to Grammar Nazis here, yes the wored "conjunction' was on purpos.

Love your "tongue in cheek" ...... funny!:lol2: I think we have all become too familiar with quick text messaging and then don't switch back to typing real words and sentences at the appropriate times

I must agree with PeepnBiscuitsRN...

If you are going to complain about the way PEOPLE are writing on this site, then you should address it generally. Please do not single out young nurses. It does not at all show integrity. It makes it look like you have something against young nurses....... I am constantly surrounded by old, middle aged, and young nurses who refuse to write, or speak, for that matter, in a way that is legible/audible. Aged nurses are not automatically literate!!!!!!!!!!!

Signed,

Very YOUNG, Soon to Graduate, Nursing Student

I think Peepn was speaking tongue-in-cheek. :) At least I hope...

But I disagree with you. I've noticed this lackadaisical approach to written communication much more amongst our young, up and coming future professionals here, than with the older demographic.

Unbridled Text-speak and the utter disregard of even the simplest of grammar on a forum representing a profession, lowers the common denominator of us all.

If people here as representing a profession be they young or old, refuse to take the milisecond required to capitalize an "I" or place an apostrophe in a contracted word i.e., "won't" instead of "wont", repeatedly, then it does not reflect well on a college-educated demographic that cries out for respect.

the best part about being in a forum like this is that we can let our hair down. this is not to be a professional conference with everyone expecting u to dot every i and cross every t. I THOUGHT this was a place for nurses to get together, speak, listen, and understand. I THOUGHT that we as nurses were taught to be culturally considerate. right now we are in a culture where text speak is not only understood but it is used regularly. so either we change with the times, or we complain that we can't understand.

Imagine if ye nurses spake in the english of thou forefathers. hmmmm

It is quite alright if you disagree with me. Yes, the younger generation is more apt to write in text style, but that does not make them the only group who does it. You said you've noticed this much more amongst the young... I don't think that qualifies as ALL of the young... Furthermore, when a portion of those who are supposed to be part of the educated demographic lashes out on another part of the educated demographic, that TOO lowers the common denominator of us all. My point is: If a complaint is to be made about some action that is being performed by people on this site, please do it generally. Unless you go through everyone's profile and look up their age, it is wrong for the complaint to be made only of young nurses. That's my point. Disagree if you must

^^^Fantastic. Memo this to the leaders of the free world.^^^

"Hey ackmadinajab, could u plz qwit makin bombs.

signed,

ur bff Obama."

singinRN, I completely understand the need to "let your hair down." I get that.

But this is a highly visible, public forum representing our profession. I agree that some of the rules around here can be a bit like the workplace...

...regardless, can we please let our hair down without lookin like idjits? Taking the miniscule amount of time required to use a few punctuation marks and correct grammar to the best of our ability, floats all of our boats a bit higher. :)

A former boss and current friend of mine once told me, "If I'm going to go get stoopid, I'm going to go to some town where no one knows me, or what I do."

Imagine if ye nurses spake in the english of thou forefathers. hmmmm

Wouldn't that be,"thine forefathers"?

No i dint. :)

i spelled the wored purpos on purpose.

Sincerely though, I do hope our bright youngsters newly graduated, are not submitting resumes addressed to prospective employers as such:

"to whom it may concern,

i would like 2 work in ur hospital..."

Honestly, I hope that they ARE. If their resumes get tossed in the circular file on first review I have a better chance of being the new graduate called in for an interview.
