Can we start with grammer, speling, and punctiation?
I am amazed at the number of postings in here that assault the written English language. I am not referring to perfection, Lord knows I make plenty of mistakes myself. I am definitely not referring to those who's first language is not English. I am speaking to the outright ignoring of the basics.
It doesn't take but a second to capitalize your "I's." Really it doesn't.
Perhaps I am just old, cranky, and out of touch with the texting generation.
But when i c posts with run on sentencis multiple mispels lack of punctuation like apostophes in conjuctions im wonderin if u r able 2 c what im saying lol i mean. omg. we look like illiterit.
:)
P.S. to Grammar Nazis here, yes the wored "conjunction' was on purpos.
Y'all need to learn the difference between jargon, colloquialisms, medical abbreviations, and trash talkin'.The forefathers may have spake differently, but they didn't spell differently amongst themselves.
And here I thought I was in for a boring Friday night . . .
I was thinking the same thing.
To be honest, I think this post should be closed because of the arguing going on. I am young and a nursing student and whether someone directed it at a certain age group or not, it shouldn't start a huge fight. I personally know people that are younger and older who text and "text-talk." I really do not think the original poster intentially tried to offend people so this fighting should subside so we can act like the mature adults we really are.
Hey y'all, remember......It is just the Internet!
Might be a good idea to cool off and get the thread back on track before the wheels come off and derail the whole thing. A lot of good discussions get closed down because posters start going after each other---and I'm not saying I've never been guilty of it myself---but trust me, it never ends well for those involved.
As one who learned proper grammar and spelling at a very young age, I find it difficult to understand why so many people (of all ages) neglect to use these tools in their everyday lives, let alone in the workplace. I text like a madwoman, but am so anal-retentive that I'll go back and retype an entire text from the point of a typo. HOWEVER---I've learned to be less judgmental of nurses who aren't as picky as I am. I once worked with an RN who spelled it "seazur", but if I were having one, I'd want her standing by my side pushing the Dilantin and Ativan.......she was one of the smartest and most capable people I've ever known.
Oh for the love of Twix! I was being sarcastic, very sarcastic!
I get very weary of the text-speak as I associate it with a particular demographic and mentality- both of which have proven themselves time and again as mind blowingly childish. I think a nurse of any age/experience level can see that. I've been an RN in title for nearly 2 years, but in practice for nearly one year. I don't see any singling out of anybody except those who make a spectacle of themselves. When I read a post that is seeded with misspelled words and text speak, it instantly gives a bad impression, one of laziness and childish mentation.
I must be really tired because I've been wearing these crabby pants for the last four days... or maybe it's all of the APA style writing I'm being forced to submit to to complete my BSN. Wait...APA...that would be "...style writing I AM being forced to...."
SweetPIE, IMHO I think guttercat is trying to stop this from turning into something bigger than it is. Please stop trying to pick a fight. I do not think that was guttercats intention.
Yes.
For the love of Pete.
But thick skins abound here, so no one needs to go to bed mad. :)
I've found some of the comments in this thread funny (in a good way), some sarcastic (in a good way), some downright troubling, and all interesting.
I'm most confounded by the poster that argued practicing as an RN, is not a profession. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that angle.
"So we want to be respected as educated professionals?"
It has never been my ambition to be respected as an educated professional. I wish to be respected as a highly competent nurse. If I know my stuff and show it then I could care less if people consider me educated. I am not even sure if we are professionals. I can't think of any other professionals who must punch a time clock. It is clear to me that many of our employers do not consider us professionals, as evidenced by the whole "scripting" fad.
Yes, whenever I'm trying to figure out if I should respect a profession or not, I go to that profession's Internet discussion board and check out their grammar, punctuation and spelling .
I've learned that English teachers are the most respected of all professions. That's probably why they get paid so much more than doctors and lawyers.
When I commented on this post it was to state, simply, that all kinds of people use text speak and shortcut styles of writing on this message board. It should not be something that is attributed to young people or their ability to write a resume. That is offensive. It was never my intention to go back and forth with anyone. However, when the subject gets tossed to the side and one decides to give me a grammar lesson, I will react.
I think that the cure for that is medical marijuana, PRN. Be sure the get your card along with your script. EVERYONE knows if it is prescribed, you are okay for your drug test. No, but I think maybe if I take some of them there fine, Benzos, I could quite posssibly read through some of the posts here without wincing. Now, how to find a quack doc who will prescribe them for me, hastily scribbled under some concocted diagnosis like, "Colleague Grammar Disappointment Traumatic Shock Syndrome."
just keep swimming
