I love nursing, I love patient care the most and the TLC side of nursing. I can be quiet but at the same time Im quite bubbly and I try to be optimistic I however also LOVE music, I play guitar and its how I destress after the day. I often play at friend get togethers and basically singing and music is just something in me...I know how odd that sounds lol I often find myself singing away to myself while Im on clinicals...like obviously not at the patient but while Im doing tasks like making beds. Does anyone else ever catch themselves singing?
My aunt who is a ARNP now was a RN for 11 years before obtaining her masters. She is definitely a singer, as is our whole family actually. She told me a story of an old veteran she took care of during her night shifts that didn't have any family or much time left. He had heard her humming early in the shift while performing tasks in his room and asked her if she was a singer. She replied yes, and he asked her if she could sing the national anthem one last time for him and hold his hand. She obliged, sang for him, and early the next morning he passed away. Now who knows if that was just a cheesy story to get me to go into nursing, but I still love it anyways. I say utilize all your skills because you never know if your gifts will aid someone unexpectedly.
What a lovely story. I imagine that your aunt helped that old guy finish his business and have a dignified, peaceful death.
Thanks for sharing that.
We have therapy dogs ( A doberman and retriever) who come and visit every week. Once a month on Wed we get a harpist that travels to all the sister hospitals. She comes and will play in the halls if unable to go into rooms or will go into specific rooms if requested. Between the dogs and music it can really calm the environment.
I think they should bring in 5 minute massage therapists, but in the meantime we will have to stick with singing to ourselves for relaxation:lol2:
And, I love the theme song of Civil War...it's called "Ashokan Farewell", and is beautiful.
Of course, music can also be problematic....I was driving to work, and heard "Dance Band on the Titanic" "It's the End of the World as We Know It" and "Oh, Death" (random mix off my iPod), one after the other. I almost turned the car around and went home.
And on the way home the following morning, I decided "Highway to Hell" should have been in my playlist....
