Sick of people who think Nursing will be easy!

Published

This is more of a vent.... but I am currently in A&P II and I don't know how many times I hear the following things from other students:

1. Can we have a word bank on our exams?

2. This teacher is horrible, the tests are worded so bad. (Really- She spells it out on the study guide.)

3. Why is she being so hard on us?

4. I hear nursing is easier because you don't have to read from the text.

5. WORST PET PEEVE: while looking at a picture of a pathological condition- a pack of girls say how disgusting and nasty the disease is. Is that what you are going to say to the patient who has this condition in the future? Sadly, the one condition they were making fun of was lymphedema...which really isn't "nasty" I could think of much worse.

We were supposed to have a specific teacher that decided to take a different career path. I guess the previous teacher was a cake walk. I didn't have him for A&P I and had to work my buns off for the A that I earned. I just don't understand why all of these people are complaining non-stop about the amount of difficulty and reading. It is hard, but the nursing program is WAY HARDER. They make remarks during lecture, talk the whole time and wonder why they barely passed an exam or got a D. The fact that they are making fun of ill people, TOTALLY disgusts me. I wonder why they even want to be nurses if they don't want to put the work into it, and if they can't feel empathy for someone experiencing an illness.

I want to say to them: This is not going to be easy, Why are you here? You are a waste of space on the waiting list... I hope you don't hurt anyone due to the fact that you hate to study or listen to what the teacher says. Why don't you stop while you are not ahead? Venting session over :twocents:

wow. I agree that the cultures smell bad (taking Micro now), but you get used to it. But a word search for a test? Are we in second grade?

My micro teacher gave us 30 multiple choice, each worth one point each, and then the other 70 points came from short answer and essay. Classmates complained, even though the teacher gave us a study guide that allowed us to be more than prepared for this exam.

I encountered a lot of that attitude when I was in my A&P classes. Don't worry about it. Chances are they won't make it in to the nursing program - or if they do, they'll be weeded out very quickly.

Nursing exams aren't at all like A&P exams. A&P exams are mostly recall and memorization, whereas nursing tests are almost all critical thinking and application problems.

Wow, if these students are complaining about the smells of streak plates in micro and formaldehyde in A&P, what are they going to do when they work on floors with patients suffering from explosive diarrhea, oozing MRSA infections, and gangrenous appendages? I doubt those whimps will get that far with those attitudes anyway.

As soon as I see people like that in my classes, I start pegging them as people that I need to stay away from. I mean, the occasional "ew" at something unusual I believe is a natural human reaction. But continuously being grossed out by every little thing in a student lab? These people need to go into accounting or something! :D Seriously!

It really annoys me when people complain about exams too. Its like, "Hello, you get what you put in." My chemistry professor is really nice and she actually gave out a 20-point extra credit to the entire class because so many people failed our chemistry II exam except I got the highest grade in the class (Go me!). Now, people can get really high grades just for making a chemistry childrens book or naming the organic structures in a recipe. Ugh, it makes me so mad when I think about this.

Those nursing students are probably going to get weeded out of the program if they don't change their attitude about school.

A bit of a VENT, sorry

It niggled me when I just started A&P II, and one student in the row "took charge" insisted all three people in my row should study for exams together. She wanted our email addresses, our cellphones, and she would schedule study sessions. Okay, first (sorry if this comes off badly) What grade did you get in A&P I??? Since 18/38 students withdrew from our class due to FAILING grades, and at least 8 had really lousy grades after the others left, is it going to benefit me?

Second, you're unfriendly when you don't join--hello, you have a bunch of kids, you work part-time, you attend school part-time, you have obligations every which way, and studying is usually conducted during the wee hours of the morning when the house is quiet!!! (Actually, you're welcome to join me then, it is a little lonely...). I studied for my first exam during my kid's school play--with my cellphone as a flashlight!).

I try make 100% good use of my time. Nursing school is going to be tough! I am focused on the goal. I got burned before when a class member in Micro offered to be "study mates." A waste of my time. We exchanged the answers to the unit objectives, and I ended up with useless stuff while she got the product of my hours and hours of hard work--and she still got a C in the class). It sounds selfish to look out for number one, but if you don't, you may not survive...

I would like to join a study group in NS--I just hope the others will understand that I don't have an easy schedule to get around. This is a big sacrifice for me, and my family.

I'm taking microbiology and I must say I'm getting a kick out of see all these bacteria! I got to make a live slide of Ecoli to see their motility last week.. I thought it was fascinating to see them swimming around like little fish under the scope. Others were definitely grossed out by it. A lot of people say this class makes one germaphobic.. not me.. I think they're kind of neat. lol

I understand being annoyed by people who think the tests should be easier... but I have walked out of tests saying things like, "Holy cow, that test was freaking hard!" It doesn't mean I didn't spend weeks studying or that I even did bad.. only that I thought the test was freaking hard. Also- I'm pretty sure I've said, "I wish we could use a word bank for this test!" before too.. wishing and expecting are two different things. ;-)

As far as the dead cats/formaldehyde goes, sorry but it does take some getting used to. We had a lab test yesterday and the lab was locked up since the previous night and I'd say 1/3 of the class had burning/weeping eyes from the formaldehyde because there was no ventilation in there for 15+ hours. Is it so horrible to complain that you can't read the questions because your eyes are burning and weeping so heavily your vision is blurred?

I'm not trying to discount your rant since you have a very good point.. but what is so horrible about venting that you get confused by the wording on an exam or cant breath because the room full of dead cats in preservatives aren't something you're used to?

Just playing devils advocate.

I think the same thing. I HATE it when people constantly complain about how hard it is and how much we have to study... then you'll ask them how much they study and they'll always find a list of reasons about why they didn't have enough time to study. I study A LOT, I go to school 4 days a week and work 2 to 3 days... I may put in a grumble or two here and there about how I'm exhausted, but these people that are nonstop complaining usually are the ones that don't work and still live at home for their parents to pack their lunch and do their laundry (now, I'm not saying I wouldn't like that too, but I would take FULL advantage of having the extra time!!)!!

Another thing that drives me CRAZY is when teachers waste my time in class by reading a powerpoint that's exactly what I read before class to prepare for the lecture. I have to sit through a 5 hour lecture that teaches me absolutely nothing... I find this very frustrating when I know I could have learned more on my own from home in half the amount of time.

And FINALLY.... when my clinical instructor lets us leave an hour and a half early from clinical (when we only have ONE 8 hr clinical a week!!!!) and we get there a half hour late... so ultimately I end up on the floor for 5 1/2 hours (half hour lunch)... this drives me NUTS!! I'm here to learn, I'm spending a lot of money and I want the hands on experience.. And then it cracks me up when someone in my group will give me a dirty look when I state after lunch, "would you like us to go back on the floor till our post conference at 2pm?" because they want to get out at 1pm like she let us last week (and then again this week :( :( :()

Thanks for listening! :(

I hear ya! We just finally got around to Gram staining (blizzard here threw us off a bit) and I got it right on the first try. It was cool to see B. subtilis and E. coli on the slide together, in different colors!

Wow your post attracted me because of the title. There will always be these stupid people in class and I will tell you from experience they still are in nursing school though extremely less. One good thing is the one's who think everything is gross, I haven't had any in my classes yet at this point, I mean in my nursing classes. Last but not least anyone who thinks your pre-req's are harder then nursing school are going to have a fast and painful awakening, it's a whole new ball-game

I know you were referring more to the OP, but you have a point regarding the formaldehyde. At my school I think it was the strongest the first time we started to tear into the cats (sorry for the crude choice of word, lol :D) but once we kept returning to the cats in other labs it was either less pungent or we had become accustomed to it. By the time we did the practical, these cats were practically scent and fume-free. But I digress. Perhaps the formaldehyde was a bad example. But similar "ew, gross" exaggerations were common with even the simple task of picking a sheep's heart out of the bucket. Did anyone do the Snyder's test in micro (where we had to spit in a cup and mix with green agar to detect for sugar, something like that)? That was a big "ew gross" moment with the weak of heart. They should be happy we were not testing vomit !

I thought the op was referring to just hearing or seeing things in class and saying that which I encountered in micro we had a girl that said that anytime birth or breastfeeding was brought up. Now she's about to graduate and I'm sure she's not like that, I think you get immune. We just went over skin assessment and had learn all the different lesions and they were just wonderful especially the pressure ulcers. Anyhow the real reason I wrote about this is because I wanted to ask you Paco69 were are you at with nursing schools? Have you picked one and if so when are you starting :) ?
