This is more of a vent.... but I am currently in A&P II and I don't know how many times I hear the following things from other students:
1. Can we have a word bank on our exams?
2. This teacher is horrible, the tests are worded so bad. (Really- She spells it out on the study guide.)
3. Why is she being so hard on us?
4. I hear nursing is easier because you don't have to read from the text.
5. WORST PET PEEVE: while looking at a picture of a pathological condition- a pack of girls say how disgusting and nasty the disease is. Is that what you are going to say to the patient who has this condition in the future? Sadly, the one condition they were making fun of was lymphedema...which really isn't "nasty" I could think of much worse.
We were supposed to have a specific teacher that decided to take a different career path. I guess the previous teacher was a cake walk. I didn't have him for A&P I and had to work my buns off for the A that I earned. I just don't understand why all of these people are complaining non-stop about the amount of difficulty and reading. It is hard, but the nursing program is WAY HARDER. They make remarks during lecture, talk the whole time and wonder why they barely passed an exam or got a D. The fact that they are making fun of ill people, TOTALLY disgusts me. I wonder why they even want to be nurses if they don't want to put the work into it, and if they can't feel empathy for someone experiencing an illness.
I want to say to them: This is not going to be easy, Why are you here? You are a waste of space on the waiting list... I hope you don't hurt anyone due to the fact that you hate to study or listen to what the teacher says. Why don't you stop while you are not ahead? Venting session over
I think I am one of the only ones in my classes who did not complain that everything was too hard. It's supposed to be hard! I think a lot of people don't know what they're getting in to.
I esp hate when I tell people I am a nursing student and they make a comment like, "oh i heard you have to clean up people's sh*t." Yup, that's what the job is, a human zookeeper!
Anyhow the real reason I wrote about this is because I wanted to ask you Paco69 were are you at with nursing schools? Have you picked one and if so when are you starting :) ?
Ha! Things are rolling. See my signature line, it's the up to date on what's happening with me and nursing schools. In a month, I will know for sure where I will be going!

Aw! Good luck. I am trying to earn a good overall GPA and science GPA to be accepted in BSN nursing program in the university. I have like 50 credits atm.. by the time I go to the university, I will have around 70-75 credits... taking too long. I just want to start helping people.. that's what I want to do. I am currently studying CNA and I hope to find a job in a hospital only on the weekends.. I don't care but I am not going to work during the weekdays because I plan to go for the BSN. I need more time to study. I want to work as a CNA for a while to get used to all the equipment and whatnot.. Also, to help patients. :)
There won't be any word banks in NS. The tests are far less about recall than they are about application. These tests care far less about what happens to A when B gets pushed, and far more about why A does it does when B gets activated in a certain specific clinical/therapeutic instance and what the Nurse needs to do about it. You're lucky to get a study guide at all in fact and when you do it will be purposely so vague and general and weird as to be not only not useful but probably hurtful to your study habits.
I wouldn't worry, to put it very bluntly, these people are probably not going to get accepted.
Hang in there.
I'm taking microbiology and I must say I'm getting a kick out of see all these bacteria! I got to make a live slide of Ecoli to see their motility last week.. I thought it was fascinating to see them swimming around like little fish under the scope. Others were definitely grossed out by it. A lot of people say this class makes one germaphobic.. not me.. I think they're kind of neat. lol
I loved Micro. My instructor was AWESOME, definitely the best teacher I've ever had in college. He had so much education and experience and was really passionate about teaching at the CC level. I learned so much. I wish I could take it again! I remember thinking it was challenging at the time but, man... Nothing compared to my first Med-Surg class.
Also, regarding the post about cats, I'm so glad that my A&P class did fetal pigs instead of cats. I'm a big cat person and even though I think I probably could have done it... It would have definitely affected me more than the fetal pigs which didn't faze me. Not because of "grossness" though. I just like kitties.
Eh.....its annoying that they may take up space ahead of you on the wait list, beyond that, dont worry bout them. If they find everything to be gross, they will be in for a huge wake up call when they have to work with patients in clinical IF they even make it that far.....and many DO quit when they find out nursing isnt what they thought it would be. And you have to remember that probably half of people that start into any nursing program DO NOT make it through. I know in bio that i had to take as a prereq for A&P I had those girls that were all about being nurses and thinking it would be easy.....and when we were doing BASIC metric conversions.....mL-L, kg-g-mg-ug,....and i was just doing them quickly, the one girl turned and looked at me and goes "OMG you are such a genious, how do you do that?" I was patient and showed her, but really, unless she really learns it, how far into med calculations do you think she will get? I think many, especially ADN at community colleges, go in thinking oh its a 2 year program it must be easy, and I will come out making such good money.

That's exactly what they think and the reason they think it is, I believe because it's how nursing school and nursing has been presented to them by the schools.
I am not saying this is wrong, these are businesses with their doors open for a reason, but trying to tell these people that reality diverges significantly from their imagination is pretty moot; they don't want to hear it, have an interest in not believing it, and, frankly, again, have good reason for not believing it since it's contrary to what they have been told.

I know what you mean. I'm in the same class as a guy who wants to become a nurse to flirt with the doctors.
