Sick of people who think Nursing will be easy!

Published

This is more of a vent.... but I am currently in A&P II and I don't know how many times I hear the following things from other students:

1. Can we have a word bank on our exams?

2. This teacher is horrible, the tests are worded so bad. (Really- She spells it out on the study guide.)

3. Why is she being so hard on us?

4. I hear nursing is easier because you don't have to read from the text.

5. WORST PET PEEVE: while looking at a picture of a pathological condition- a pack of girls say how disgusting and nasty the disease is. Is that what you are going to say to the patient who has this condition in the future? Sadly, the one condition they were making fun of was lymphedema...which really isn't "nasty" I could think of much worse.

We were supposed to have a specific teacher that decided to take a different career path. I guess the previous teacher was a cake walk. I didn't have him for A&P I and had to work my buns off for the A that I earned. I just don't understand why all of these people are complaining non-stop about the amount of difficulty and reading. It is hard, but the nursing program is WAY HARDER. They make remarks during lecture, talk the whole time and wonder why they barely passed an exam or got a D. The fact that they are making fun of ill people, TOTALLY disgusts me. I wonder why they even want to be nurses if they don't want to put the work into it, and if they can't feel empathy for someone experiencing an illness.

I want to say to them: This is not going to be easy, Why are you here? You are a waste of space on the waiting list... I hope you don't hurt anyone due to the fact that you hate to study or listen to what the teacher says. Why don't you stop while you are not ahead? Venting session over :twocents:

Of course it is not easy. Some people with feeble minds may think so. Nursing and pre-nursing classes were not meant to be a breeze. It's designed to prepare students for the real world of nursing. Many who go into for financial gains are fooling themselves as well. I love science and anything medical related -- but I'm finding some classes very arduous. The people who are grossed out by the A&P labs should quit now -- and spare themselves and the future patients.

I completely agree with you about your worst pet peeve. When I took microbiology, I had some women who sat behind me and would make all these comments like "ewww," "gross," "disgusting," at almost every picture. It was beyond annoying. I don't see how people like this are going to function as nurses. These women weren't even that young, and they were acting like they were twelve. Our instructor was a pretty hard of hearing, and these ladies would sometimes make such vulgar comments to where the whole class could hear, but the instructor wouldn't notice.

I'm taking microbio right now and there are so many young women who cringe and yell "ewww!" "gross!" "nasty!" at just about every bacteria they see. Then they complain even more when our streak plates smell in lab. I don't understand how someone is going to be a nurse if you can't look at a few pictures of bacteria. They have also asked for a word bank/word search game on our exam next week. *headdesk*

My first semester in nursing school there was a group of girls in my classes that were in the hall after a test. They were saying that they are not concerned with learning the material just passing the class. Then in class they would complain about their grades when they would not do so good on their test.

I just hate the word bank idea... no one is going to give you a word bank when you are working with a patient. You have to work hard for this kind of an achievement, its not gonna be just handed to anyone. I wouldn't vent normally, but this has been every single class so far: NON STOP WHINING. It's driving me nuts.

I had not seen a word bank until this year. Imagine, students complaining that there is too much info. included on the word banks and study guides...come on, guys, the answers are staring you in the face!

One of my other pet peeves is when other "wannabe" nursing students (I am a wannabe!) inquire about my grades and test scores, and assume that because I don't divulge them with specifics (e.g. grades and test scores), I need their help on how to do better (than them, but worse than I am doing on my own). I think they are trying to size up the competition

What is a word bank?

A word bank is a list of the terms for the test. Say you were labeling arteries and veins for an A&P exam. There would be a diagram with blanks, and a list of vessels to put in the blanks, that way you don't have to necessarily know ALL the terms, as most people can deduce what's left after they fill in the ones they know...

Some of my instructors have used them, others don't, but the ones that have usually only use them if the material is more difficult than usual.

What is a word bank?

It is where they give you a fill in the blank test but they provide the words to use in the blanks in a word bank at the top of the page.

I had a basic chemistry class last semester and we had a week to do a take home open book, google, whatever you wanted to use test and when we got our grades back one girl was not happy with it. She asked if she could take it home and find the correct answers and get a better grade, the instructor agreed! It irritates me that I spent a lot of time trying hard to get the right answers the first time.

Can I vent for a second too?? Since my husband is the only one that always has to listen to me about it lol... this girl that is in my A&P II lecture, A&P II lab, Microbiology lecture and Microbiology lab, (and sits next to me in all of them! -so is my partner in both labs!) never studies, complains about getting homework, calls both of the teachers horrible, cruel names because she got a bad grade or failed the test, misses class and then puts her name on OUR lab work that I did ALL the work on, texts and mumbles under her breath the whole time in lecture. SO ANNOYING!! I study very hard, I have 2 babies, ages 2 and 9 months and a husband. She always complains that I have so much more study time then she does... excuse me??? She is 20 years old, lives at home, doesn't have a job. We had a test in A&P II yesterday, she didn't study because, "it doesn't help anyways" it's like, WAKE UP!!!! She got a D in A&P I last semester so she has to retake it, you would think she would try harder this semester!! Sorry, had to vent. I know how annoying it is to have these type of people around you. I take comfort in the fact that I am transferring to a four year college and the program is very intensely competetive, everyone that is there will have worked their butts off to get there! (just like me!)

-oh, and did I mention that this girl says, "I'M NOT STUDYING ON THE WEEKENDS!!!" when the teacher says good luck on your studies on a Friday??!! Gosh!!!

thanks for sharing your vent, I just had to share mine before I take it out on her at school...

Your just gonna have to take a deep breath. Nursing school is hard. Not just a little hard but, crazy hard. Those people that complain that tests arent easy enough will be weeded out by the tests that include chose all that apply and pick the BEST right answer. And all the answers are right. Those people will be replaced by other people that complain. Pretty much nursing school is full of complaining. I was guilty of it. It helps relieve some of the unbelievable stress that everyone is working under.

Some of the things are gross, and will make you throw up in your mouth. You get used to some things and some you will not. You'll have many conversations about how gross something is.
