I'm finally going to be on the floor after 2 wks of orientation.
Panera has these awesone pink ribbon bagels(in honor of breast CA awareness month) that they only sell in October of each year' Honestly, stores sell out before noon becasue they are that good.
Would it be "smarmy" to bring bagels the very first day?

Part of me wants to say, yeah that is a great way to break the ice! The other part wants to say that it looks like you are trying too hard and might cause some awkwardness. I think later on, after they get to know you (a few weeks?), might be a better time. Just won't be the bagels that sound so yummy that I might be visiting my Panera very soon. lol

I agree. Wait a week or two.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
I vote to take the bagels.

How about last day with your preceptor? or has that already happened?

I say don't take bagels to work the first day. It'll look like you're trying too hard to impress your co-workers. Wait til you get to know them a little better...you'll find out if it's one of those units where people always bring food or not. Good luck.

Don't do it, not for the reason's any of the other posters list, but because then it will set your standards high and people will begin to expect you to bring bagels every day.

I agree, not yet. Wait and see the unit culture.

I think that person should be able to do something nice like this without worrying about being judged...
If these are the type of people that will judge and gossip about you for a nice gesture like this then I wouldn't want to work on that unit.

I would personally wait a week or two... so it doesn't look like you're trying hard to impress. After a couple weeks you'll get to know them all a little better :)

Do not take bagels your first day of work. You'll look smarmy and like you are trying too hard, wayyy too hard.
However, your last shift with your preceptor, or your first shift on your own, yes!
I'll be honest, if a new nurse the first night she ever worked with us brought food, I'd think it was odd. Why is she so desperate? Why does she need to feel like she has to butter us up? Do I have to bring bagels for her to think I'm nice? If I don't eat a bagel, bring food, or similarly try to butter her up, is she going to be insulted, or think we're unhelpful or ungrateful?
If, after I've gotten to know you, you bring bagels on your last night of orientation/precepting, and you laughingly say "This is a thank you for the great precepting so far, and a thanks-in-advance for answering all the questions I'm going to ask the next several months!" I'd think it was cute, funny, and totally appropriate.
FWIW.
