I'm finally going to be on the floor after 2 wks of orientation.
Panera has these awesone pink ribbon bagels(in honor of breast CA awareness month) that they only sell in October of each year' Honestly, stores sell out before noon becasue they are that good.
Would it be "smarmy" to bring bagels the very first day?
NanikRN, I personally think it would be a kind gesture, but given the disparity in the opinions expressed here, I believe you're wise to take the cautious route.I also want to thank you for posting this question! I never would have thought that doing something like bringing in food on the first or second day of a job would be considered anything but generous and thoughtful. The possible "kiss-up" or "needy" spin that could be placed on such a step had never before occurred to me. And given how much I like to bake, I probably would have taken homemade muffins or something like that to my first day in my new field (which also happens to be dominated by women), thereby giving some of my coworkers a poor impression of me from the very start. So thanks for saving me from myself! :) Good luck with your job!
I too would have thought, "what a kind gesture". But this is why it's always good whenever possible to elicit input from people who don't think like you as well as those who do. It would never have crossed my mind that this simple act would raise anyone's eyebrow, but apparently it would. It sounds like the way to go is by being genuine and keeping the idea, but also being savvy and reconsidering the timing.
Thanks everyone! I never thought this would generate so much discussion. But all viewpoints are appreciated.
Today was my first day and I did not take bagels. Which was a good thing 'cause most of the staff does Weight Watchers.:)
I absolutely love my preceptor; she's very relaxed, personable, and best of all--she likes to laugh. We had a good time working together.
Everything went extremely well and I'm Looking forward to my shift tomorrow.
Thanks again:yeah:
