Short Rant Alert!

Nurses are highly trained professionals that make positive impacts in peoples lives every day. So are plumbers, electricians, mechanics, and any other worth while profession. I am soooo over nurses whining about not being appreciated and the over glorification of nursing and nurses. I am NOT that needy and don't think it's a good look for us.

My "lunch" consisted of a pop tart....and then I only had time to get 1/4th of it down. At least once a shift I really do wish I was wearing a depends.

What kind of pop tart?

Oohhh, love the brown cinnamon sugar ones!

Interesting that I chose a mechanic for this comparison. However, your mechanic is not overworked and underpaid. The level of compassion and concern does not compare.. and mechanics are not considered the most trustworthy profession on the Gallup polls.

When I don't have time to stop to pee and change my overflowing tampon until 8-10 hours into my shift, that's a problem that needs to be recognized. I'm not asking for praise, I'm asking for change. I'm asking to actually have a break and be able to eat a healthy meal. We, as nurses, know that urinary retention can cause UTIs and not changing a tampon for that long puts me at risk for Toxic Shock. The minute I get to eat to shove a Hot Pocket in my mouth is not adequate. Shouldn't we be able to practice what we preach?

I feel somewhat appreciated by my employer but the most of the time I feel like they're more concerned with their bottom line than employee satisfaction. I've felt this way at several employers while working as a nurse so I know it is not limited to this company.

You can call this whining, but I think things need to majorly change. At my husband's job, the mines don't shut down. They're running 24/7. They keep this operation running because they provide enough ancillary support staff to allow people to have adequate breaks. Plus, they're heavily regulated by OSHA and actually have something holding them accountable.

Just my two cents.

...especially at the end of the shift while emptying everyone's catheter...12 hours is a long time to go without a bathroom break!

eh same except it was a condom cath lol. i like the chocolate poptarts the best

Off brand blueberry with frosting. And I'm not saying c/o our working conditions is whining, and I don't even hear too many nurses "whine" about anything. That was a poor choice of words on my part. I don't like the glorification of nursing, it can be excessive at times.

Is that the pop tart?

That's my pop tart of choice, Impal hasn't made a disclosure yet.

I pretty convinced that part of my current bladder problems today (stress incontinence and leaking) were the result of going 12-14 hours (and more!) w/o a bathroom break. Now I find myself having to go to a uro-gyn specialist to figure out what the heck to do about it. No water intake PLUS no bathroom breaks and urine the color of cola, for years; yea it's a problem. We nurses joke about it, but to me, going through what I am now, it ain't a joke. And we deserve better. Much better.
