Nurses are highly trained professionals that make positive impacts in peoples lives every day. So are plumbers, electricians, mechanics, and any other worth while profession. I am soooo over nurses whining about not being appreciated and the over glorification of nursing and nurses. I am NOT that needy and don't think it's a good look for us.

A lot of times we are not appreciated for what we do or get praise for the less important aspects. For example: you caught a med error. Pt doesn't know/pt doesn't understand the importance. Pt and family think you are sweet and caring and always make sure their needs are met like pillows, blankets, conversation, etc. We know which gets a thank you most of the time. So yes, I can understand why we don't feel appreciated at times.
But, I also hate this "nurses are heroes who never pee or eat and hold your hand and give hugs to crying grannies and blah blah". All the saccharine memes floating around on my Facebook wall make me a little nauseous. Like you say, there are many other professions providing vital services and do they do the same? Do garbage men post up memes about how self-sacrificing they are? (I don't know, maybe?). Cause I sure as heck appreciate them and I would not be able to do their job. It is just a fact that in any aspect of life even when we deserve accolades, we may not get them. Plus, I knew going in to this nurse life I'd be giving up pee breaks and hugging grannies on occasion. No delusions otherwise, lol.

Interesting. You are on AN for a month, need a break after 2 weeks, come back with a rant about nurses?
Nurses are a special breed of person.
My plumber, mechanic , and electrician not only make more money than I do, they get lunch and the LUXURY of using the bathroom when necessary.
When's the last time your car broke down and your mechanic showed compassion and concern ?
My son's car was acting funny so we took it to the dealer. He diagnosed the problem, quoted a $2,000+ fix and suggested we take it somewhere else that could do it cheaper, and didn't charge us anything. Yes, there is comapssion and concern everywhere you look. That was actually what got me to thinking about this.

Yea, I love my mechanic. He has done much the same for me and my fam. Also love my plumber, who insists we pay him in beer.
That being said, I love nurses the most, and I think we do keep on giving, as a group, where other professions throw in the towel.
I'm not a martyr. I like being paid. I love lunch.
I knew going in that this slogging through stuff and not always getting lunch etc. is part of the job when people are sick. People should recognize. I don't need the glory, but some respect would be nice.
And I will always hug a crying granny, lunchboxRN, because they have caramels in their purses.
Waaaait, a second, you are needy for NSIME's likes but you are NOT needy for respect as a nurse? What the?
What can I say?
So true. I find I get more candy from the elderly gents, though. One always has peppermint patties, score!
That said, I don't mind hugging every once in a while, sometimes it does me good as well.

My "lunch" consisted of a pop tart....and then I only had time to get 1/4th of it down. At least once a shift I really do wish I was wearing a depends.
