School Shootings

Sad that we may need a category for this.

Another school shooting in NoCal.

Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.

This discussion seems to be getting very heated as the "gun discussion" usually does. Here's the bottom line: kids are scared. One will argue it's a gun problem. Another will argue it's a mental health problem. Yet another will argue its a societal problem. Maybe it's all of it. Some people have guns without proper training or instruction on how to safely store them to keep them away from children--that's an issue. A lot of people are suffering from severe mental health issues and do not have the resources to get the help they need OR they are unwilling to get the help early on because of the stigma around mental health--that's an issue. We live in a country where we're more afraid of our kid seeing a boob than a bomb (in tv, movies, video games, etc) so violence is normalized early on--that's an issue.

It's scary. It's scary to be in a school and wondering if there's a kid walking the halls who will snap. It's scary to go online or turn on the tv and be bombarded with nonstop details on the latest shooting, the latest shooter, the way the latest shooter shot up the latest school to get the most deaths. It's scary to hear kids talk about school shootings and have real fear that they may be next. Somethings gotta give. There's got to be some sort of compromise ON BOTH SIDES of the political spectrum so that we can all agree and vote on a MULTITUDE of laws to help begin fixing many issues. There isn't ever going to be one thing that fixes it all. We can't just take all the guns away or fix the mental health crisis overnight or kumbaya everyone into loving each other.

Well said :)

One more comment...SRO on site, swift and lethal response to a deadly threat to the students...the plan worked. Praying for God to wrap the two injured children in His arms of mercy for a complete recovery.

Old Dude, the happenings of todays shooting got me thinking. Should there ever be a shooter in my school (my kids school) what would happen? There's no SRO. As I played it through my head (because that's how my brain works) all I could think was "there needs to be an armed person in those first classrooms". Without the chance to fight back those babies...my babies...are just sitting ducks. Our school doesn't have a vestibule, once you're through that front door, you're all the way in. Likely a lockdown wouldn't even be able to be called before the secretary gets shot (all glass office, straight shot to front door).

Needless to say, I'm conflicted. Very conflicted. I don't think the answer is guns, but there's no telling how many lives that SRO saved. Ugh. Prayers for all involved.

Armed officer on site was NOT a deterrent.

Aaaannnd I just bough (with my leftover budget money - thankful I have it) bleeding control kits. A big kit for me, and two smaller ones to place in the front (first line of entry) and with our athletic trainers (in the back near the gym). Maybe I can't prevent someone shooting but I can prevent someone bleeding out. FYI, Macgill has "active shooter" kits that are horrifically expensive....you can assemble what you need with the basic kits and some tourniquets.

I did this same thing. I put mine together for $25-30. The expensive item being the QuickClot.

Kidz...what point are you trying to make other than, yet again, argue your tired point about how you "feel" about guns? Your opinion isn't relevant in regard to the reality of today.

Are you saying those kids at Great Mills High School would be better off today if there was NO armed officer in the building? Geez, why the hell do you think the SROs are there? They are there to KILL anyone who tries to harm our children. Why would you want it any other way?

Guarding our children TODAY has NOTHING to do with gun control, or legislation, or student walk-outs, or the future voting populace ridding society of the evil firearm...and has everything to do about keeping my kids and your kids safe at school!!!!!!

You know I love you like a sister and BTW...my opinion of guns isn't relevant either. What is relevant is keeping our kids safe at school - every day.

My point is that having the armed SRO there was not a deterrent. I keep hearing that it will be. I have already seen a dozen of pro gun folks using today's shooting as an example of how guns at school help while ignoring that if this kid had no access to a gun, things would've been different.

You call it a "tired point" but we keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. I don't have another point. It's the same point it was after parkland, after Vegas, after Newtown, after columbine, after [pick your favorite mass shooting].

My favorite mass shooting was today...which is an example of NOT doing the same thing. I've no idea where the future is in regard to gun control. Until then I can't think of a better intervention than have armed officers at the ready position in our schools and see where the future leads in the political arenas of infighting and backbiting, and lobbyist, and paybacks, and payoffs, and dogs chasing their tails; whether red or blue. The whole scene makes me wretch.

I just took a great course "StopTheBLeed" and am now able to teach my staff. The good tournaquits a in the $30+ range bu tthe trauma dressings about $5. Meeting with the Emergency Planning Team this week to move forward. If we can put a kit in every Go Bag, we can make a difference.

Her point is relevant... to many of us. While I disagree with some of yours., I have no need to to call you irrelevant. that is just not professional or productful.
