School Shootings

Sad that we may need a category for this.

Another school shooting in NoCal.

Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.

They did. FBI was tipped off months ago. He was still able to legally obtain his weapon.

Exactly. People are so outraged that there were warning signs, but this man still was able to do this. I don't know the solution. And I know there is more than one problem. Let's go on that cruise. Far away from the horrible reality that is becoming the norm.

I know there was an armed SRO on campus in the shooting that occurred here in KY, but again, not much else was said. This FL campus was huge. HUGE. I would think even if there were two armed SRO's that it's likely the shooting spree was over before one of them could even get to where they needed to.

I hope more information comes out.

I keep thinking about those who say "Why didn't anyone say anything, there were all these warning signs!?!" Okay, but I could go to the police today and tell them that my husband told me he was going to strangle me at 5:03 tomorrow, and all that would get me is a lousy piece of paper. Nothing else. What would've happened if people would've spoke up? (I really am curious)

Very true...I think it's easier to connect the dots when you work backward from the end result but it seems in many of these cases a lot of omens were ignored. I know it's common now for people to be afraid of the backlash or retribution nowadays if they voice a concern about someone.

Kidz, I agree with every one of your comments. I don't just want better laws, I want people to enforce the laws we currently have in place[/b] This man is one in a string of mass shoots who should NOT have been able to pass the background check, but somehow did. We need to fix what we have to work with NOW.

I usually try to be a optimist, but I get what OldDude is saying too. Despite it breaking my heart, trying to put restrictions on guns seems as impossible as trying to put the ocean in a single cup. Even some of the best politicians can be bought, and the rare few that can't don't have the support of the rest of their party so the great things they want to do never get done. After Sandy hook, I wrote and called all of my representatives, signed every petition I could, raised as much awareness as possible. But at the end of it all, nothing changed but my world view because I saw the people who were pro gun just not caring to see what I (and the rest of the world beyond the US) seems to see. And I know we can't stop trying, but it's hard to keep trying to chip away at something that people have been on for decades.

Now more than ever, we live in a world of instant information. News sources are pressured into releasing stories as soon as possible, even when all the facts aren't available. We have a president who believes in "alternative facts" and a legion behind him who also believe that if they don't agree with something then it must be untrue. This compounded by social media, a place where you only see information from people who you are close with, who most likely share the same views as you. And then those sites use algorithms to let you view more of the things you like in order to keep you on the website more. This all keeps people in these little bubbles which make them feel even more validated on their feelings because it seems like the world agrees with them.

It is all awful, and I know prayers aren't fixing the problem, but at the end of the day when I'm holding my tiny one, those are the tools I have.

Well, our district re-circulated the the lockdown procedure by email today...so we are prepared.

What a sad yet appropriate metaphor for the country.

Our superintendent sent out an email yesterday about how our schools have done ALICE training and other safety protocols in place.

I am having a really hard time with all of this. My oldest will be in HS soon and I am picturing her, huddled under her desk, shots firing, and not knowing when it will end or if she will make it out. I haven't slept well. I think I need to call my dr about trying Xanax again.

I had to change anxiety meds after the TX church shooting. Please do call your doctor.

I noticed yesterday that all the classroom (even gym) doors a locked. Typically most are unlocked, but since the shooting they've been locked, so I have to make sure to take my badge everywhere now.

Yes, do that...I have two in high school and one in 8th grade...I never imagined this would be one of the "joys" of parenthood.

I have my badge now. All the doors are locked.

I'm really struggling, too. I started crying when I hugged my daughter goodbye this morning. She's in 2nd grade. I can't imagine her and her friends living through the horror of a school shooting. There was a shooting in a school here 30 years ago. Laurie Dann-- she was not a student, she was a former nanny of several families in the area, and she was also psychotic. She shot a few people, and killed one kid, who would be my age if he hadn't died. If it happened here, it can happen anywhere.
