Sad that we may need a category for this.
Another school shooting in NoCal.
Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.
Get rid of the guns.
The guns are not going away. Not today, not tomorrow, not next month, not next year, not in the next 50 years...the guns are not going away. It's not gonna happen so we might as well stop wasting time and energy on touting this as an option. The guns are not going away. Laws are not going to keep guns away from bad or mentally ill people. The guns are not going away.

Why not? The rest of the world has shown us that this works. Nursing is all about evidence-based practice. The evidence shows us what works.

I don't know...maybe it has something to do with having the right to pretty much do anything and everything you want to in the US with little or no answerability or responsibility...I don't know, really. I could wish but I know it's not going to happen so I've moved on to step B. Assume guns will be available to bad or mentally ill people and prepare to prevent them from killing someone and pray to GOD the tide of mental health intervention will get some traction.

I'm sorry, OD. That's just not good enough.
I agree with kidzcare.
We are NUMBER ONE in the world in homicides and gun related deaths.
Not health care, not mortality, not education, not happiness...Murder.

Not arguing the stats...I've been hearing about gun control issues since the 80s. It's not gonna happen.
What can happen, in a relatively short period of time, is a law enforcement officer, armed to the hilt, be a permanent fixture at every school campus...two or three for big campuses...be there before the first person and be there after the last person. You could fill positions immediately with retired law enforcement officers who still hold their licenses and start a the process of recruiting and training officers for future assignments at the campuses. Public service announcements should inform the community of the presence of armed police officers on each campus and each door of each school should have a sign with the same warning. This is a "clear and present danger" that could happen at any moment at any school, anywhere, so dealing with the reality of the situation in a realistic manner is the only real option. Yes this would have to be paid for...big woop - don't buy new football uniforms next year.
Now for the problem...the cutting of mental health care over the years and the continued lack of mental health care options has led to a mental health epidemic across the country. This is where the politicians can have a possibility of agreeing on something - state and federal. And until mental help is available there will continue to be those who utilize an inanimate object as an instrument of death, horror, and agony. But even if the help would be available tomorrow to all, it would be years before a positive affect would set in.
There were armed officers at the Parkland school. The shooter was a former student who would have known this. It didn't help. When something doesn't help, we need to try something else.
The health care is a related problem and a needs long-term solution. We need to vote for officials who will make this one of their priorities.
What do you propose?
I want common sense gun laws that have been shown to work in other developed nations. In the US (per the CDC and FBI) for every 1 justifiable gun killing (self-defense) there are 34 homicides, 78 suicides, and 2 accidental gun deaths. Not worth it.
I want people to think about the children killed in church who were "shot beyond recognition" to really think about that and decide that the lives of these children (and 1000s of other people) is worth more than their hobby.
I want people to do their research and not vote for politicians who have accepted massive donations from the NRA.
I want to not cry myself to sleep thinking of the parents who did not get to kiss their children good night last night.

I want all that stuff too Kidz...but wanting it isn't relevant to reality. It's not gonna happen. Guns are not going away. We MUST deal with that reality and plan for it.

Kidz, I've read your references to armed officers at this school but I can't find that reporting. Can you lead me to that?
