School Shootings

Sad that we may need a category for this.

Another school shooting in NoCal.

Thinking of NoCalMimi and hoping she's okay.

Here is the thing about that school, they resumed classes when the scene was cleared. So these kids had this traumatic event, students and a staff memberwent to the hospital, a whole class room of kids was patted down with their hands behind their back, and then they went to math? SMH, what has the world come to.

I know parents were allowed to pick up early, but that wasn't until after 1 pm, and the event happened before 9.

I'm withholding my final opinion until more comes out but I can't imagine how a firearm would "accidently" discharge more than once. It appears there was more than one shot fired.

Intriguing that it is a girl.

The article I read mentioned that there were graze wounds, so perhaps that is how multiple people were injured? The only statement from a student I say was a relative sayingtheir student told her there was "a loud pop" and everyone panicked.

I admittedly do not know very much about guns, but I have heard that firearms cannot discharge if dropped.

With some semi-auto handguns, there are grip safeties, and other mechanisms that make it impossible for the gun to fire if dropped. So, if the handgun involved in this shooting didn't have a grip safety, the only way I can imagine it could fire is if a round was in the chamber, the gun was "cocked" and the manual safety was off, and then there would have to be some combination of items in the backpack, or exact positioning along with a very smooth trigger pull for momentum to make the trigger move enough to fire the weapon. After the discharge, considering the gun will "recoil," I can't imagine how the trigger could be "pulled" again by the same objects in the backpack. A trigger pull would be the only thing that could cause a second shot. If it was an antique revolver where there wasn't a firing pin block or if it was a worn out revolver it could discharge if dropped but it's absolute, 100%, there would be only one shot. I'm skeptical about this being "accidental" but still waiting for more facts.

If there was only one shot, the bullet would have traveled through the girl's wrist, zinged a couple of people and hit the boy in the head...shades of some the the Kennedy assassination theories.

I'm with OD on "how in the heck!". It grazed two kids, and would've had to have went through the wrist to hit the other kid in the head. In the words of Princess Anna from Frozen "I'm not buyin' it".

I would be interested to hear of witness accounts, did anyone see the girl get the gun out of her book bag? Did anyone hear more than one gunshot? Of course after the first, the panic and screams are probably overwhelming.

I CANNOT believe the day carried on. How absolutely ridiculous. Traumatizing for the teachers, students, parents.

Last but not least, why did this child have a loaded gun in her book bag and is still only charged with negligent discharge of a firearm?!?!

So awful. The US is the only country in which this happens regularly. We need to follow the lead of the rest of the world.

Just heard about Florida. Ugh. My heart just hurts for our youth. They should NEVER have to fear for their life, especially in school. Terrifying.

Prayers. And prayers. Hugs Florida friends.

I'm so sad that this thread has a reason to exist at all, much less to keep going. Sending love to you all who are still out there in the trenches. Every time I hear of a tragedy like this at a school, I think of you all in this forum and hope you're okay.
