First day back

Good morning!

I said to the beloved (who is also a nurse) "I bet I see some Thanksgiving hangovers today."

First visit of the day - before school starts, before I have time to put up my stuff even - stomachache. Parent is aware. Parent sent the kid to school.

Afebrile student who isn't nauseous, doesn't need to poop, and who ate breakfast.

Me: How can I help you today?

Student: I don't know.

Me: Do you want me to call mom and tell her she was wrong?

Student: Yes, will you?

Me. NO!!!

I heard the wheezing before the student even got to my doorway. No inhaler, wheezes all lobes, AR 146, rescue called. They gave 2 breathing tx while here waiting for mom. She didn't want them to transport--too expensive.

She signed saying she knew the risks and drove child to ER herself.

Bums me out when $$ overrules good medical care, especailly when it can go so bad, so fast. Hopefully the Tx she got carried her safely to ER.

So sad that this is a concern for so many people. So sad that this is a choice that has to be made. I've heard of some ambulance rides costing up to $1000 depending on one's insurance- not to mention the cost of what will be done in the ER. I am fortunate enough to have great insurance through my school. Without it, when my daughter broke her arm I would've been out at least $8000.

I've had odd complaints all day.

I know with a nosebleed we aren't supposed to have the kiddo express the clot...but this kid was in my office for ten minutes holding his nose as best he could while I helped all my regulars , so I brought him to my sink and the biggest clot I have EVER seen come out of a nose plopped into my sink. The bleeding stopped but I'm still kinda in shock. lol

This happened to one of my kiddos at the end of October too. I have no clue how the clot even fit in his tiny nose!! Once the clot was out, the bleeding slowed waaaaaaay down and then stopped. It was crazy.

Luckily the hospital is only a 5 minute drive. No charge for the paramedics to come, but the transport would have been about $800. I think cost was also the reason she didn't have an inhaler (not that it would have helped in this situation). Parents make too much for medicaid, not enough to afford insurance, it's so very sad. My heart hurts. For you (because even though it's only five minutes...you know mom can't resuscitate and drive). For mom (because, what a choice). And for the kiddo. With any luck there'll be a good social worker at the hospital who can help access something.

FF comes in this morning c/o stomachache. Stated he vomited Friday, stomach quesy since then and diarrhea. Mom sends email to "warn" us. Says she will come get him if... Why send your child to school? He tries 3-4 times every week to go home, and, Mr. Wonka, you have just given him a golden ticket! Ahhhhhh!

... and he is still here at the end of the day, mom or dad never called and I kept sending him back to class. The look on his face when I told him his parents aren't calling back was so heart breaking. Parents of the year. BTW, this couple reminds me of Julian's parents in Wonder.

Every bump, bruise and scratch that happened over the long weekend now hurts and needs an icepack!

I was expecting a run of Monday morning malaise and was just finishing my before-homeroom trio of students needing catheters placed when they started sick started arriving. The first was a child with a pretty nasty cough going. When asked why she even bothered to come to school if my office was going to be her first stop, she told me that her mother told her to try it tough it out and if she felt bad she could go to the nurse and ask to go home. Great. I guess that works if you suspect the kid was faking it, but this one obviously was ill.

Got threaten by a parent that her doctor is mad at me because I didn't give her enough time for immunizations. Thankfully Covered my butt with paper trails and keeping track of my phone calls with a spreadsheet.

We have 16!!! It's totally workable but still seems so far away :)
