Hi fellow nurses!
It's been a while since I've been here. Hope you're all doing well.
I come asking for some assistance... My school's admin would like to send out a newsletter from the school nurse, touching on topics like nutrition (eating breakfast, taking vitamins, healthy food choices) and cold/flu season.
Have any of you ever done this?
What would you put in your newsletter?
TIA

Most of the newsletters go into the trash, unread. I try to avoid them at all costs.

save some costs - make a google site, link a few reputable articles on age appropriate nutrition or link a few decent you tube videos or links to healthy / nurse sanctioned type crafts and activities. people are just going to round can a paper newsletter, so why drive yourself crazy with making up a paper newsletter if your principal is married to the idea. This way you're honouring their wishes, saving money and they can post it on their website and be all paperless and tree-friendly.

I no longer have to submit anything for our newsletter - Thank goodness! But when I had to contribute to the monthly campus newsletter I had about 3 dozen articles, bits of info etc that I recycled thru every year. Short and sweet type of things & policy reminders (lice, when to keep you child home when sick, 5th grade camp, medication reminders etc) I tried to tie the info to whatever was happening that month around campus.
LOL! Very true!
My admin has caught onto technology and the newsletter will be emailed.

I did 3 last year for this first time because my principal thought it was a good idea. I haven't really gotten back into it this year (and have a new principal). My first one in the fall had sections for: "should your child stay home from school", winter weather coming up, medication reminders, and lice reminders. They were short one page things, not sure anyone even read them!
No paper being used here...
We email almost everything.
But I love the idea of using links! Maybe we can do that on our school's website.
Thanks, Flare. :)
Lucky you! I feel that as the years go buy, admin looks for mor e stuff for me to do .
Sounds good! I'll try to round up a few things and pick at them for relevant information. I like decorating my bulletin board with a theme related to the time of the year (if that makes any sense), so maybe i'll take that route with the newsletter.

Your policies on absences and info about influenza might be timely here.

DO you have EHR? I have SNAP and i run a monthly report at the end of the month that gives me how nursing visits were to my office. You could include some stats like that if you have them. For example: For September the nurses office had 411 student encounters, 22 dismissals from school, return to class rate is 94.2%. I find that stuff interesting, maybe others would too.
Also, google "monthly health observances", maybe you can pick a few to focus on, like "Dental Awareness" or whatever, you could have some children focused ones, as well as adult (like breast cancer awareness month). They also give websites and articles so you could include those.

I restarted one in my old district. To make it less onerous, I asked all the school nurses in the system if they wanted to send submissions, and we linked it online to the school website. I think one of our deans also sent it electronically to my school's parents via the master email list.
re: subjects- when there were multiple nurses working on it, there were more suggestions about issues to cover.

They asked me to put a small section in the newsletter, but I'm not sure what to put myself. Was thinking to put something about Flu season.
