Say what...?

I just had a student that said "I have a headache. [Teacher] said you would give me an aspirin and call my mom"

Um, no. Sorry, afebrile child. It is less than an hour until dismissal, you have no doctor's orders here, and I'm not comfortable giving anyone under age 20 aspirin. Lay down for 10, then it's back to class. And tell [teacher] that I can do my job without his/her input.

Seriously. I had a teacher send a kiddo down to the office with their things with a note that said, "So-and-so needs to go home for a cough." They did not cough once while in the health room....

Also, biggest pet peeve to send anyone who is not bleeding/vomiting/needing an inhaler/blood sugar check right before dismissal. If ya lived this long, you'll live a little longer!

Every day teachers send students down right before the dismissal bell! It's ridiculous. Unless they have a fever or are vomiting, off they go. I still can't figure out why teachers do this!

Then I love when a child has been fully assessed, rested and was sent back to class, only to return 10 minutes later. 9 times out of 10, the child is fine and just trying to avoid classwork.

And my favorite...Students who eat lunch and run around at recess and then think they can skip class and rest in the Health Office. New rule..if you are well enough for tag, you are well enough for class. (Big meanie!):nurse:

That to me is the hardest part of school nursing! The staff drives me crazy. I have this teacher that writes in huge letters all over pass NEEDS TEMP CHECKED. No **** sherlock, I never would have thought to do that on my own! She walked one down to me today and interupted my lunch (just sat down at 1:20).Temp 97.6. Then she argues, well, had a severe nosebleed this morning. It must have not been too bad because nobody called me or sent him down. Still not excludable condition!!! She handed me his pass with her little note emblazoned on it to check temp. I lost it. I told her that I was more than capable of figuring out want needed to be assessed based on student's symptoms.

Student was sent down to nurses office due to ripped pants (2nd time this week) and wanted the nurse to sew his pants. LOL Not sure if the kid was suppose to stand naked in my clinic or I was to sew them while he still wore them. Oy vey.

I almost went all angry South Pole Elf on the teacher. In the name of all that's Holy, not holey, please tell me where we learned sewing in nursing class? We are not in the 1910's where nurses possibly were expected to do "domesticated" housework as part of their job role. If you want me to sew fine......I will charge you a $45 fee just like the cleaners do for me when I need them to sew something for me.

Lord, you don't want me to suture you then! lol

Does that mean we can use a foot-pedal suturing machine? ;)

So much word on the sending kids down five minutes before the final bell for something like a "headache." Seriously, if you lived without Tylenol all day, you will live 5 more minutes. :banghead:

And while I do actually know how to sew thanks to theater costuming experience, I do not stock a sewing kit in my office (Nor do I share my sewing skills with staff). My kids are older - you have a rip in your pants and get send my way, I will hand you a roll of duck tape, talk you through taping the rip from the other side so you can complete your school day. You will fix it yourself in my restroom. Has worked every time.

That is a huge pet peeve of mine. It also really kills me when the teacher takes it upon herself to call the parents because the child is sick. Thanks for the help, but no thanks... Most of the time, that child if a frequent flyer and you just got played, plus, when the parent shows up, I look like an idiot because I have no idea what is going on.

As for medicine, I am very fortunate in that area. We do not supply medication for students. They must bring in their own supply, which I keep locked in the medication closet.

We don't supply any either! You would think the teachers would know that since I let them know EVERY year... It really burns me when other staff try to supersede my judgement. I had one student that threw up in class after I sent her back (no fever or vomiting in my office after 20 minutes) and the teacher was so mad. I told her I couldn't send home every kid that c/o a stomach ache and she told me "Well [this student] would not lie. I know her!" Well, there are 1000 kids in this school, and I DON'T know her. I don't like having a student throw up in class anymore than you, but I can't see the future.

I have also had situations where students have called from a classroom or cell (they are not supposed to have them on during school) and then a parent arrives and I have not heard anything. I tell the parents that the student never came to see me and then remind the student of the cell phone policy (in front of the parent)
