RN License plate

In my state we can get an auto license plate that has RN with a picture of stethoscope on it. Today I learned an Lpn in my facility has one on her car. She is not in school to obtain her her and no one in her household is an RN. I just find this strange.

I recently saw a personalized license plate that said:

Gr8 RN

I just would never want a license plate that said RN on it at all. Doctors don't have special "Doctor" license plates do they?

Well, yes they do.

I have seen quite alot of MD plates, actually. Not sure if my state has one specifically for RNs, but I most definitely see plenty of MD ones.

I'm trying to imagine who would want one of those. I don't want random people in the parking lot at Target to know that I am an RN.

My thoughts exactly.

I personally think it is insulting to have a RN plate when someone has not obtained it. I also think it is pretentious to have an RN plate.

Pennsylvania doesn't have specific RN plates - so I got vanity plates for my car that says ARR ENN…along with the Penn State nursing sticker - I've never had anyone come up to me and ask me any questions - its not like people wait by the car to ask me questions when I come out of Walmart or something…besides my hubs drives my car a lot so if its him he couldn't do anything about it anyway LOL...

I'm pretty proud of myself for becoming an RN as a second career while raising kids…so it doesn't bother me.

I personally think it is insulting to have a RN plate when someone has not obtained it. I also think it is pretentious to have an RN plate.

How is it pretentious to have a nursing license plate? It's not my thing, but I can see wanting it. I think using the word pretentious in your post is a bit pretentious especially with something so trivial.

Actually...... it isn't so trivial..........there are many states that have laws protecting the title Nurse......and Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, CRNA etc. The additionally have legislation making it a crime. The ANA states.......

Title "Nurse" Protection

Background

The intent of restricting use of the title "nurse" is to protect the public from individuals who are not licensed nurses, yet deceitfully lead the public to believe they are and able to provide services that only nurses are qualified to provide. A solution is to enact legislation amending the state nurse practice act. Nurse practice acts describe entry requirements, practice standards and codes of conduct with the intent of protecting the public against unethical, unscrupulous and incompetent practitioners. The regulation of nurses offers some assurance to the public that a nurse is competent to provide services in an effective and safe way. Restricting use of the title "nurse" to those who have satisfied the licensure requirements ensures protection the public deserves.

For example.....
Florida

Title 32. Regulation of Professions and Occupations Chapter 464. Nursing. Part 1. Nurse Practice Act Fla. Stat. 464.016 (2002)

So it is unlawful in some states. Many states have pending legislation. I could not find information about Indiana...the OP's stated home state. This link is from 2012 and is outdated for the new states that have adopted or changed their laws.

Title "Nurse" Protection

I am a L&D nurse and have had STORK RN as my plates for a long time. No one has ever bothered me because of this. I am super proud of what I do. So I don't think there is anything wrong with it. And to tell you the truth I have got out of a few speeding tickets because the officer realized that I was a nurse.

I agree, if you can afford it and like the idea of having an RN license plate why not get one? We all worked very hard to earn our title!

Specializes in NICU, ER, OR.

maybe it isnt registered to her? who knows.

The real question (as it applies to the OP) is does the so-called "RN plate" explicitly say "RN" on it?

One of the plates posted on this thread simply said "Be a Nurse" and had a picture of a stethoscope on it. Why on earth couldn't a LPN have such a plate??

The license plates in our state are in being developed to support our nursing foundation and to show support for nursing in general. Anyone can get the special plate, nurses, their family members, students and future nurses. Our plates were designed with the WVNA Foundation logo and the stylized lamp from ANA. Be proud of your profession and support it on your car. After all if NASCAR, firefighters and other special interest groups can have their plates why can't we, we save lives and have super powers:yes:!
