Ritttenhouse Trial

Published

The Rittenhouse trial has begun in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The prosecution is presenting first, but apparently the defense argument will be self-defense. So a 17 year old travels out of state with his rifle to a demonstration because he fears for his life?

Its pretty cleanly a microphone, but I get it, he's black so even a microphone can look menacing.

Thats not really fair. I think most people during a time when violent protests were common, if they saw a group of unfamiliar people in their neighborhood, black or white, with dark object and in the shape of a gun barrel, they would be concerned.

When you zoom in on the picture, even on the picture from the individual in questions rear, it clearly is a microphone.  Facing the object from the front, as close as the McCloskeys were, there could have been no doubt what it was.

I didn't even really look that close as I wasn't defending the McCloskeys.

But, now zooming in, I disagree with you.  That's not your typical microphone, and it looks very much like a gun barrel to me.

There is no video evidence of protestors ever crossing the hedge row to invade their lawn.  It is easy to misunderstand that the mansion was on a legally, private street.  All the McCloskeys had to do was go indoors.  They are just a couple of  white trash nut jobs like Rittenhouse.

"White trash" is a racist term like anything else. The color of their skin has nothing to do with them or what they did. Not anymore than thinking the black man looks "menacing" because he's black.

There were signs saying private property and had to break through a het to get in.

I agree.  I wasn't defending the actions of the homeowners.  My post was addressing this statement by Muno:

"Its pretty cleanly a microphone, but I get it, he's black so even a microphone can look menacing."

I actually thought it was a barrel of a weapon too which makes it all the more foolish that she's doing what she's doing.  That it's a microphone makes more sense.  It highlights my point that so much could have gone wrong.

You can argue all you want that they were trespassing, that it's the couple's fault for escalating the situation, that they were innocently in their home being threatened and defended their property,  evidence about this and that, bottom line to me is everyone was lucky.  The people killed by Rittenhouse not so much.

I totally agree.  It has no place in conversion.

And speaking of Rittenhouse:  I came across this in one of my online newspapers The Forward.  Hannah Arendt was an Israeli ethicist and philosopher who immorialized the Eichman trial in Jerusalem.  She commented on how the interests of the prosecution and the judges had been separated which was the situation in Kenosha.  The kook-judge had a playbook written for the defense.  Asking the trial attendees to applaud for the military was a sympton that he probably needs to be retired.  But I do like the following paragraph the reporter added to his comparison of these two trials?

This, in turn, leads to yet other parallels. In her epilogue, Arendt dwells on a disturbing paradox: the imperative for a proper legal response to the unprecedented crimes of the Nazis and the incompetence of existing laws. We, in turn, must dwell on the confounding yet coherent conclusion of the Kenosha jurors. A teenager who, toting a deadly weapon with the intent to defend property he did not own, proceeds to use it in order to defend himself against individuals provoked by the sight of the gun, is within his legal rights.

He was defending the property not stealing and killing people to get it like "Nazis". Very different. Perhaps if more people defended Jewish people and protected them and their property then maybe so many of them wouldn't have been murdered by nazis??? Ever think about that???

And of course, the jury are "Nazi" sympathizers for their verdict.

For a Jewish women she should be ashamed of herself and anyone else who likes to equate nazis to everything g they do not like.

Perhaps the rioters are the nazis because the one was a pedophile and liked to set fires and say the n word. Last time I checked nazis also did sex crimes against children and like to set things on fire including people . So  Rosenbaum is a nazi!! Stupid right?

She needs to reflect on her opinion because likening a US Judge to that of a nazi is almost nazish in itself.

No. Nazis are a disgusting breed and there is nothing worse than them ever and nothing yet has come close. Calling everyone and everything nazi cheapens the label and is a insult to the 9 million people who died at their hands.

I'll throw ya a bone. Nazis were white! Hopefully that's satisfies some peoples nazi racistaddiction.

This post, the white trash comment and think a black man looks menacing because he's black is pure racism! However no where near as bad a nazis.

I believe in freedom of speech but today is the first time I've been tempted to report something.

You guys might be right about that label.  Let's change it to white racists.  If the crowd were white people protesting, these morons would have never pulled their guns out.  Remember,  all these white people would be on the other side of the hedges observing the rule of private property.....just like the black protesters were doing.

I think I agree.  I can't remember a group of protestors more demonized that BLM.  I really do hate that that many of them turn into riots.   But listen to the talk about them.  When it's BLM it's "the city's destroyed" and when it's January 6th it's "people taking selfies at the White House", or "people getting caught up when most of the protest was peaceful".

And look at how many deflections people make to BLM when we are talking about Jan. 6h.

Also look how the press reports it.  "These thugs were out destroying the city".  When it's a bunch of white college kids rioting when their team loses it's "this college crowd got a little rowdy".

We are mocked for wokeness and trying to point this out, but we're always trumped by the violence and destruction and the point gets lost.  We had 100% peaceful protests here, but when a group passed a group of diners the white diners flipped them the bird and someone films the protestors stopping and yelling out them loudly "Black Lives Matter!" repeatedly before moving on and one of them sat down for a picture with them.  People lost their mind and couldn't talk about anything else but the poor couple that couldn't even eat dinner in peace.  The mayor's Twitter and FB blew up with outrage.  One can argue that it's racist to flip the bird at someone walking by and protesting, and one can argue that it's wrong to interrupt their dinner like that and they should have sucked it up and walked on.

I'm so done.

I'm not sure what you mean? Why would you assume a black man is menacing? Or that I would assume it was a gun not a microphone because he is black? So should I've assumed he was a rapper because it's a microphone and he's black?

If it is a microphone from that angle it looks like a gun even with a strap. I didn't even notice his race until you pointed it out. Perhaps you should reflect on your own implicit stereotyping?

I take your word for it that, even though to me it's pretty clearly a microphone, you didn't see the microphone as a gun because the person holding it is black, I hope that's the case.

And maybe that's some baseball / sports bias on my part.  These microphones are mounted all over the place at sporting events, they're hard to miss and are pretty recognizable as what they are.

The idea of BLM is amazing. However the few that are the loudest and destructive  now are the representation. Leave it to loud violent  people to ruin it.

I guess.  There's no bigger sports fan than me.  I haven't noticed them before, all over the place.  Even if I did, I doubt that in that split second moment in that scenario, as opposed to having a photo to study,  that would be the first thing I thought of.

I Googled there are such a things as "shotgun microphones".  It does look like what's in the picture I posted above.  So if you knew about it, that's what you'd see.  But from behind it does look like a rifle to me.

Who knew?? ?
