Ridiculous Reasons to See the Nurse

Published

So, we really need a place to log the ridiculous reasons some kids have to get out of class and come see the nurse. You know, those pressing medical problems like, "my lips hurt." I had that one today.

Earlier this year I had a student come see me because she had a hair on her tongue!!

Somewhere there is a teacher giving these kids a clinic pass for these visits!

What are the crazy reasons to see the nurse at your clinic??

I just had a student come in this morning with a tight ring. I am certain I could have gotten it off but the teacher said they had already tried everything and there was no way I could get it off and she had already called her parents. While we were waiting for Dad I had her run down to the artroom for some yarn but Dad walked in just as she came back so I never got the chance. I have gotten a lot tighter rings off in the hospital setting. Was really disappointed that I didn't get to show them my mad skills lol!!! Dad took her to the factory where he works and she was back in twenty minutes.

My mom was an ER nurse and trying to explain with the string. What do you do, exactly?

Wind it down the finger to squeeze the swelling out and make the finger skinnier, stick the end of the string under the ring (which is the toughest part) and then pull/unwind the string. It's pretty slick. There are some good youtube videos that show how it's done.

I've seen this before and wanted to try it, but I don't think any of my little ones would stand for it!

Two sisters at 0730:

Sister #1- "My nose is bleeding." No active bleeding; no blood in nasal passage.

Me- "I think you will be fine. If it starts back, [insert nose bleed stoppage directions here] and come see me." Naturally, she will skip the directions and just come to my office with blood pouring...

Sister #2- "I have pink eye!!!" No redness, swelling, or discharge noted.

Me- "What makes you think you have pink eye?

Sister #2- "My teacher said so..." :banghead:

Ok, I thought I'd had some students sent up for pretty stupid reasons, but this takes the cake (at least for this week!)

Student comes up with a buddy, holding a paper towel over her eyes. Buddy is carefully guiding her, as she cannot see due to said paper towels.

Reason for nurse visit? "I have soap in my eyes"

(big sigh on my part) "well, go into the bathroom and rinse it out"

10 seconds later, student comes out of the bathroom and says "OK it's much better now. I can see"

With a lecture on reasons you do not need to come to the nurse, the student was sent back to class.

I saw the teacher a few hours later and said "Ms. So and So, sending a student down for soap in her eyes? She couldn't have rinsed them out in the bathroom? Really?" Her response, "Oh, you wouldn't believe, some of these kids have no sense and can be really stupid. I can't believe she needed a nurse visit"

THEN WHY DID YOU SEND HER, AND WHO IS THE STUPID ONE??? said the voice in my head!

:banghead:

(sigh)

Reminds me of one of my pediatric clients but at 3 he has a lot more sense. Sitting in tub, eyes squeezed shut "I can't see! I can't see!" Me or mom "Well, how do we fix that?" Kiddo "I open my eyes. (Opens eyes) Wow! That's amazing!" Cracks me up every time!

Monday morning, first bell rings. I stood up to go to the restroom while I had the chance...NOPE. Kid walks in with one eye that looks slightly pink. I'm sure you know where I'm going with this. No nasty-looking conjunctiva, no discharge, no pain or soreness, just slightly pink. Sound the alarms! It MUST be Pink Eye and we're all gonna catch it! E-gads! Happy Monday.

I had a kindergarten girl sent to me a while back. I asked what was wrong. "I got water in my eye." Please, please. Someone, anyone... HELP ME!

Who told her she needed to come see me for that??? I am so scared for future generations...

A student just came to me and said "It feels like everything inside of me is turning to mush"

Third grader: My tooth is loose and bleeding

Me: Is this the first tooth you have ever lost?

Third Grader: No it's my 4th loose tooth

Me: Then this is no surprise, it will bleed until it falls out, drink/rinse with cold water until the tooth falls out

Third Grader: Can you pull it out?

Me: I might pull the wrong one
