Rich nurses?

Nurses General Nursing

you guys are mostly from the USA?

I just glanced over a thread and it seems you guys are ridculously overpaid?

In Australia.. nursing is by far not a well paid job. Its maybe just average. My step dad who was a traffic controller - held a sign that said "slow" and "stop" on the flipside got paid $10 an hour more than me.. i kid you not.

i would hope that the air traffic controller that is guiding a plane i am on is at least as competent and devoted to accuracy as a nurse

however the reason that the atc might be earning more money is the the number of atc ae outnumbered by nurses probably by 100 to 1 however they can not find another job as easily as a nurse

Air traffic controllers make the list for a career that pays 100,000+ and I don't see how their job is more difficult than a nurse's. ;)

we are nurses who are responsible for patients lives! you think we are overpaid for saving lives?:nono: What a shame to think so.

oh my goodness!!

im a nurse (an RN to the forum member that asked) why would i say that we are overpaid? i was simply saying that alot of people have the conception (misconception in my books) that nurses are well off. in another thread someone said the pay is decent. i thought this must be a US thing.

68 grand a year for an aussie nurse? must be a manager and/or experienced nurse, clearly non victorian nurse with salary packaging and maybe a gross income estimate also. and definatly not a base income. must factor in shift allowances and weekend penalty rates.

i really hope i havent offeneded any of you, just found it strange. and clearly im not jelous of anyones pay.. like ive said in previous posts.. no one (including me) i know enters nursing "for the money" its ridiculous to think we're well paid. HOWEVER, i made this thread thinking that in the USA nurses must be well paid becuse so many forum members have mentioned that its not a bad living and some have put their incomes on the net which seemed at the time to be quite well off. prior to considering the cost of living in each state differing and so forth and so on.

i hope ive made myself clear and dont further offend anyone.

cheers!

No offense taken tiij.

Just to clarify, I am on the top scale as an RN of 14 years and I work in NSW which is the highest paid state in Australia.

Oh, I don't really think anyone was offended by your question! It was just that it caught many of us off-guard, thinking that either US nurses were "rich" or that we were "overpaid". I think most people wouldn't object to being thought of as rich, lol, but it does bristle the arm hairs a bit to think we do what we do and someone would consider us overpaid. Honestly, there's plenty of days when after a gruelingly miserable shift I think "I don't care HOW MUCH they offer me tomorrow, I'm not coming in no matter WHAT!!" ;)

I could support my family of 4 on my income, but wouldn't want to. We'd be safe if my husband lost his job (who, by the way, brings home more than twice my income.) Most of my income is used to pay off my student loans - the rest goes to savings and retirement.

Well let's see, they make a mistake and several hundred people die, in a blazing crash, destroying expensive equipment and possibly doing massive damage to everyone/thing below them. We make a mistake and one person is harmed or dies.

Nah, it's not that hard....................

Ouch! I read through this thread trying to figure it all out. I don't think anyone could rationally work out whether any of us are well paid, except in comparison to fellow workers in our own countries. For example (I have said this in the Australian section) my brother works as a foreman and earns 50$ per hour. We all know the responsibility of nurses, and I earn probably half that much *grrr*. But that just indicates how our country values nurses in comparison to other modes of employent *sniff*.

And I don't think it matters how well we are paid in comparison to each other. If some of us are better paid than others, well good on them! They earn it! We all do!I am a new grad RN; I was a level 5 EN (same as LPN) and I earn the exact same amount as I did before. But it increases each year. Nurses in my state are paid lower than most, and we are not recognised money wise for extra qualifications (except, I think, midwifery).

But as you can see, this differs across Australia! Let alone across the world! I figure, lets talk nursing, not money...

Don't air traffic controllers have one of the highest depression and suicide rates amoung their profession? I could not do that job...way too much responsibilty. Nursing is hard work but as the poster above says, at least we aren't responsible for 100's of people. And then when they do make a mistake, everyone in the world knows about it. I think they deserve every penny.

We get our richness through the good things we do in life, such as nursing
