Religious believes expressed in nursing theories. For or against

Published

Hello everybody,

I am a BSN student taking a nursing theory class at the moment. I was wondering what is everybody's opinion regarding expressing religious believes in nursing theories. Does it offend you to find the word "God" when reading about certain theories. Example : "Persons have mutual relationships with the world and God" (Quote from my theory book re works of Sister Callista Roy)

I am Catholic myself so I do not find such statements offensive...I am just wondering what others think on this topic

Thanks:heartbeat

Do we both have kids on here??? ;););)

That is the greatest comic ever!! That is my husband to a T!!

FWIW using the term 'God' excludes my religion, and generally only directs religious inclusivity to monotheistic religions based on a male figurehead, which kind of leads us granola crunchy earth mother and zen types out of the funfest.

But I'm used to it, so not all that easily offended.

I'm not sure why people get offended by hearing the word 'God'. I never could grasp what is so offensive about it, but it seems to drive some people bananas.

God is not offensive.

It's how humans use God's name and the context it's used in that's offensive to me.

Yes, they were agnostics or atheists.

I find current nursing theory to be a crock, frankly. After Nightingale it was all downhill. She had it ALL right - keep them clean, comfortable, fed, and let nature and medicine take care of the rest.

Everything else is fluff for theses.

They weren't all atheists and agnostics, Suesquatch. Surely you are kidding.:no::jester::confused:

When I am teaching nursing theory classes, I bring up religion and culture, but I don't bring up the actual word God. I always say creator, maker, whatever one believes in. I don't want to offend my students that may be of a different religion, belief, or non belief than myself.

Hope this makes some sense :nuke:

Welcome to Political Correctness 2008. Personally, I am going to say "God" if the desire arises. I get offended when I have to worry about offending someone else every minute. Let them worry about offending me for a change.

Twelve step programs have a saying that we should take what we like and leave the rest. I think the world was a better place when people were expected to do that more. I'm not saying we should be insensitive or try to actually hurt or offend anyone. I just resent my tax dollars going to secular school districts where someone can't even say the word "God", for God's sake. I know you're talking about college - some of which are also recipients of my tax dollars. There, people should be even more mature and expect to be exposed to lots of new concepts, some of which they might not like, accept, or care to incorporate into their lives. Nevertheless, their education will have included this word or concept and they will be the better for having been made aware of it. Knowledge is power.

Anyway, how can you have a religion without a god or consciousness of a god type essence or something superior to humans? How do you guys define "god" or "God"?

My :twocents: FWIW.

I thought we were discussing nursing theories, not religions. Did I miss something?

Sorry, I thought the OP asked about offense being taken when a theory supports a particular religion or the concept of God.

This is definitely me too... How embarrassing that a particular type of person is pointed out in a cartoon AND that it is 100% accurate. :imbar

I am going to be frank, so hold tight: What you are doing is silly.

Religion isn't a play-ground game about feelings. Honest, respectful, clear, adult conversations about religious truth claims and practices would be much more useful than pretending to respect religions by reducing their metaphysical, moral, and theological claims to mere opinions.

...and as i have stated previously, when an american says that they don't believe in god, it's always the judeo-christian god that they don't believe in!! no one seems concerned about the existance of or theolgy related to thor, buddha, mohammed, shinto ancestors or the sun-god!!

if the god of the bible is such a fantasy, such a fairy tale and myth, why is he the only one atheists and secular humanists have issue with?? surely hearing about god doesn't force anyone to believe, any more than hearing about the menace of global warming according to st. al of gore makes me believe in that
