Moving to Durham, NC from Los Angeles
I highly recommend Old West Durham and Watts Hillendale... great neighborhoods, affordable, and within walking/biking distance to the school (parking is a mess at Duke)

what is an okay GPA to put on your resume?
I would tend to agree--> only a GPA that is very significant: 3.9, 4.0... but that would be signaled by other things that may be more meaningful and look less "bookish"... Sigma Theta Tau... Summa Cum Laude, etc

Unprofessional School Orientation
I hate to say this, but welcome to nursing! Unfortunately unprofessional behavior is more the rule than the exception--I'm finishing up at a fantastic school, but you see the unprofessional behavior in the units, in preceptors, in interviews... Stay true to your reasons for going into nursing, be wise in picking your fights, and survive the idiots so you can take their job someday.

Duke ABSN loans? Should I even apply?
DUSON's in-house scholarships are definitely worth applying for--not a waste of time at all!

oh, so you're studying to be a "male" nurse...
My father in law said "so you're going to be **like** a nurse, but you'll be a man." I said "Actually dad, I'm **already** a man, and I will be an **actual** nurse, not just like a nurse." "So, you'll be **basically** a nurse, but a **man.**" "I am a **man** who is going to be a **nurse**. **Man is my gender.** **Nurse will be my profession.**" Wow--that was painful

In nursing school clinical did you experience discrimination / bias from instructor?
Sorry for what you are going through--hope it ends up with you back in the program and eventually an RN... I have had very supportive faculty and clinical instructors. In fact our Maternal Health professor brought in a woman to speak about her experience of having a male L&D nurse. In my OB rotation I did face some very discriminatory behavior and statements from nurses on the unit. The women and families I worked with seemed to really appreciate the care I provided, and the nurses I worked with directly seemed happy with my work. But, I did have to endure some ugliness from other nurses AND a 20 minute lecture from the charge nurse about why, basically, men (only nurses of course, not MD's, scrub techs, whatever) were not welcome on the unit.

what are the best mens scrubs you have found?
Larry77 mentioned Aviator scrubs back when I was first starting my ABSN program, so I took his advice. I'm glad I did. They look great, are tough, and they have as many pockets as you could ever want--I can't tell you how useful the pen-pockets on the sleeves are! People are always loosing pens or laying them down on dirty surfaces, and I have mine right where I need it. Thanks Larry77

Any nurses with myasthenia gravis?
I have a professor who has MG, was diagnosed at 10 yo. She works nationally with MG issues, so I'd be happy to pass your contact info on to her. Please private message me if you'd like for me to make that contact. God bless you in your struggle. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Anyone applying to the Duke ABSN program for Fall 2009 (c/o 2011)?
From a member of the 2010 cohort: congrats to all of you who've been accepted. I hope you will love the program as much as I do. It's challenging and transformative--cheers! shane

any ideas for a good nursing school/program?
If you have a Bachelor's degree already, then I would highly recommend Duke. I'm in the ABSN program there: 1. Phenomenal faculty with expert clinicians from the Duke Health System as guest lecturers. 2. Amazing facilities, labs, libraries, hospital 3. The best admissions process--very very thorough, but very respectful of diverse experiences and backgrounds. 4. We have a couple of military guys in the program with me 5. a well-funded, organized chapter of American Assembly of Men in Nursing 6. great loan repayment options if you stay with Duke or go across town to UNC 7. outstanding Office of Global and Community Health hope to see you there--shane

Male Nursing Instructors
We have a number of male faculty members, CI's, and lecturers: both they and their female colleagues are highly competent professionals who bring individual strengths and personal styles to the learning process. Gender, in my experience, makes no difference in their ability to teach. It *is* nice, as a male, to have males on the faculty as professional role models, but I think that the style difference you are experiencing is more of a matter of personal characteristics of the teachers than it is anything to do with gender. Also, it may be that your preferences about which nursing professors you prefer are just that: personal preferences.
