Read the thread before you post!!!!!

Published

Sorry, vent here, and please don't flame me for saying this.....

I'm getting really annoyed reading threads in which the exact same thing is said over and over again! Please please please please PLEASE read the existing posts before adding your own, and know what the original post was about before adding your thoughts!

If you don't have time/don't want to read every post in a long thread, then do what I do - just stay out of that thread!

Okay thanks, I hope ya'll don't hate me for saying it, but it's driving me nuts. I just finished reading new posts in a 20 page thread, and I bet 100 of those posts say the same exact thing! :deadhorse

There are a lot of things that run me up the wall (like the expression "have a good one!" or subsituting "coz" for because...I can hardly stand it!) but I have to deal with it.

I tend to avoid the threads that have more than 4 or 5 pages. I can't read through all that and wouldn't know what to respond to if I did. After a few pages things tend to fizzle and wander off topic and don't go anywhere else after that.

Each of my replies were to specific individual posts. If you don't have time to read the whole thread before posting, or at least to skim over the posts to make sure your point hasn't already been made 75 times, maybe you shouldn't be spending so much time online. And your style of talking about me like I can't understand you or I am not here is quite insulting. You see, I do read (or at least skim) the posts in the threads in which I am participating.

I don't see where there is a lot you or I can do about this issue, I don't think it will get better. I think a lot of people would do it on purpose if they know people are bothered by it.

A lot of people think the Rumplestiltskin routine is humorous.

do i expect people to read every single word of every single post? of course not. but it would be nice to have them go past page one of a thread that has 275 replies. just sayin'.

(oh yeah leslie - forgot 2 things. 1) thank you for addressing me so we know what you are talking about - you are really good about that but a lot of people aren't. and 2)just to clarify - i didn't mean topics that come up over and over again - like "how much $$ do you make" or "nclex 200 questions" because i can just skip those threads if i don't want to read them.)

what irritates me is when someone jumps into a 200 page thread, and in the first sentence of their post says "i didn't have time to read this whole thread, and i apologize if this has already been said, but blah-blah-blah." if you can't take the time to at least skim the thread, don't make the time to contribute your thoughts.

Well, I respect your opinion but everyone has right to respond how they choose even though it may irritate us. I just ignore it and drive on life too short to get upset at the small things. I love this site and love to read to what people are saying even though they may repeat it 5 0r 500 times. Have a blessed day.

I never knew so many were so easily irritated. Seems to me that to be a nurse one would need a higher frustration tolerance. What's wrong with the idea of accepting that not everyone does things the way you'd like them done? Why not just skip the posts that sound like repeats? (Asking rhetorically.)

Personally I'd rather see an active forum even if some people repeat what others say than a slow moving forum with few daily posts. Trying to make members who (may accidentally) post repeats feel like they are wrong will slow down forum activity. If a board isn't active or doesn't get enough new posts people eventually stop visiting the site all together. I've recently joined AN but people have repeated my posts on occasion on various other forums. To me anyone repeating my post was really saying they agreed with my thoughts. It was a compliment as imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

:twocents:Also-On a long thread someone can actually read every post and repeat what another said without realizing it. Just like when you're writing a parer you cite everyone but there are times you may express an idea and you may not really remember where said idea really came from. This has happened to me because of all the background reading, research and data collection I have to do before beginning to write the paper.

I'll 'repeat' (or paraphrase) Tweety's thoughts - I don't read every post because I don't have that much time.-Don't sweat the small stuff if you read a repeat. I was a long time lurker who NEVER contributed a single thing to AN. So now that I've joined in must I read every post for fear of annoying readers? If I have to wait for a completely original thought to come to me before posting it could take a very long time. :D

Or "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt" :D

I've always loved that one, but usually when it applies, one wants to avoid getting hit by the person it applies to! Unless, of course, you're the one doing the talking!:p

ha..some here must have taken similar psych classes or read some of the books we were assigned.

from the laws of power by greene:

law 4. always say less than necessary, when you are trying to impress people with words, the more you say, the more common you appear, and the less in control. even if you are saying something banal, it will seem original if you make it vague, open-ended, and sphinx like. powerful people impress and intimidate by saying less. the more you say, the more likely you are to say something foolish (greene, 1998).

I won't push the "quote" button to quote you lyceeboo - but I am responding to your post.:yeah:

I avoid long posts. Can't stand to read them. Even if they say something wonderful.

As to the op's point - I understand but I usually just skip over posts that sound repetitive.

And I don't open long long threads . . and haven't opened the "yelling docs" one.

I like Stan's ideas . . .
