Random Thoughts about School Nursing not juicy enough for their own topic start here!
My mantra lately: "Wash your HANDS, go back to CLASS and cover your COUGH!"
Here's my random thought that I think about several times a day so maybe it's not so random. More of a recurring thought, perhaps.
What is with this concept of not owning up to your actions and responsibilities anymore? Kids (& parents) now are always looking for someone else to blame for their child's "suffering." For example, "my child is being disciplined because that teacher is so mean" but certainly not because Jr was acting like a little monster at school. Or Jr got hurt on the playground because there are so many dangerous tripping hazards out there but certainly not because kiddo was playing a really moronic game & making some stupid decisions on said playground. At some point we all have to learn that our decisions have consequences that we must live with and those consequences are no one's fault but our own.
Last week I stepped out of the clinic & returned to find 2 mid school girls going through my personal drawers. Not okay & they knew better. They were here for one of them to take an add med but it took an act of congress to get them out & back to class. Every day this went on. Days later their teacher asked why it always took so long & I let her know. It earned them both a lunch detention & now the girls & their moms are angry with me. Because, somehow, I am the reason their daughters are rude, disrespectful and obnoxious to the school nurse. Ok, seems legit.
Watch mainstream entertainment, you will see multiple examples. Look at the Presidential candidates, same thing. We no longer value integrity. Not making this political, I am focusing on action and mores, America called for Nixon's impeachment more for his liberal use of the "F" word in the tapes than knowledge of the break in, while 25 years later, we are blase' about a "sexual misstep" and the fact that our President lied under oath. We have come to expect bad behavior and that those who expose the bad behavior (Kenneth Starr) are at fault. Sorry you are the Kenneth Starr in this instance. Teachers deal with this on an almost daily basis. Sad state of our state.
There is a blog by a guy named Tim Elmore. He writes about different categories. Generally, about dealing with todays families/kids, etc. His writing is amazing. For those interested, you can sign up to receive the new posts by email. I have used his posts many times, to share with parents, teachers, admins., and my school counselors. I highly encourage you to check it out.
