So funny you say that about planes! I am the SAME! I hate flying and have not done it in years. The position is regional so I don't anticipate that type of travel. But I can see the need to go to conferences and symposiums that may be required at some point. I think I can do it, but I worry about it. I know the usual training is a two week train in LA, but from what I understand it is virtual right now due to covid. I have always said I could do more but this opportunity when it ends up being 4 interviews and lots of self motivation and possibly not much direction from the company I do get a bit anxious that I am out of my league. With the sales component I have continued concern. However at the same time if I am educated on the product and my job is to educate then I think I can do it. UGH! So hard. Again I don't have an offer yet and I am still stressing!

My kids will be seniors. I have twins that will go to college at the same time, so the increase in salary is definitely a factor. We need all the extra we can get. I have found out this position stats with 4 weeks vacation plus 10 additional holidays. They close between Christmas and New Years which is amazing since I am so used to that time off. I have also heard that the time off is very flexible so I don't think having seniors would be an issue...but I don't know. As far as college tours and ceremonies, it may not even happen this year. I am scared regarding the possible sales aspect however my understanding is that I support sales by educating the product to the physician, staff and also patients. It is a field position so I would work from home and visit offices daily. No cold calling or attempting to get providers to speak to me etc like some pharm reps have to do. This states it is an educational role, however I have heard there will be some pressure regarding sales, I just don't know in what capacity.

I am in the interview process right now. I am not even sure I will be offered the position. As far as travel goes my impression is that it is regional to my area. I was told they usually fly you out for a two week training, however at this time it is virtual. This is something I will consider in my decision. I am really hoping to hear from some of the school nurses because I am torn about giving up all my time off.

Hi all! It has been quite a while since I have posted. I am currently finishing my 5th year of school nursing. I have thought about other opportunities because my kids will be in college soon. I am currently interviewing for an educator position for a diabetic pump company. This is a field position that will educate doctors, staff as well as patients on this particular brand of pump. I will assist patients getting educated on how to start on the pump etc. I have thought about this type of position for a while since we make such strong connections with our diabetics. My biggest reservation is giving up the schedule. However, since my kids are older and an increased income would be super helpful for college I am thinking it may be time. I do like my school nursing job, but as you all know it can be so challenging, frustrating and exhausting. More than any non school nurses will ever know. What would it take for you to leave your current position or would you not leave?

It does not sound like parents are treating the problem at home? I know this is a daunting task and they may need help. We have a school fund for district families that might need help from time to time, it sounds like this could be one of those times. If their solution is sleeping in a different room, then it is only going to get worse. I would call parents and discuss! But EIGHT...so many emoji's for this thread...

Wow O2 tanks in school?! I would have had them call while I was on the way, but you for sure did the right thing by calling!! We do not have stock albuterol. I have used caffeinated drinks in a pinch but not sure it would help someone with sats that low. Good Job!!
  7. We have an exclusion date of October 19th. I still have over 90. Sent email, sent letter. Next we have the principal send automated phone call to guardians stating their student will not be allowed in school on this date if the records have not been received.
  8. Hi all-I decided to come back. This year is tough with diabetics/seizures/CF and a variety of other health issues. I still STRUGGLE and question whether or not I made the right choice. I had a possible position that was presented to me which would be a pretty significant increase in pay and no direct patient care that is still awaiting approval from the hospital. I am pretty sure I will take it if it comes to me. Anyways random question. Do any of you use essential oils for ailments in your office? I have a nurse in my area that does and swears it decreases visits and less OTC meds. I'm on the fence about how I feel about it.
  9. HI all- I haven't been on much this year as it has been so busy. I am in a middle school with about 750 students (7th and 8th). This is my second year, which I have to say is MUUUCH better than my first. I contemplated leaving last year and decided to return. Here it is time again to decide if I will be returning next year. Of course we know the pay is less than other jobs, but we do get quite a bit of time off. I CAN.NOT.WAIT for summer but last summer I started spinning my wheels when I was off. I felt super down about returning. I ended up in the ER with a few health issue, which I have NEVER had. Now several months later this year has been better than expected, but the liability of it all hangs over my head. The constant chasing after families that don't follow through and the worry there is a student that has slipped through the cracks.. Anyway I have gained so much knowledge with this position and feel that being a patient coordinator of some sort would be a good fit. However I miss good 'ol hospital triage and the task/skills I used to use for that. Any of you left and done pediatric ER or urgent care? If you leave where will you go? I feel like going back to a hospital and having a charge nurse "give me an assignment" doesn't sound like what I want either..UGH..So hard. Any tips, thoughts appreciated!

I would get the exchange of info signed for sure, however you have the right to call and clarify orders.

I chart everything, even bathroom use. We had budget cuts last year and we were cutting staff based on acuity. Luckily we have a decent software charting system. But its less likely they will cut a nurse position if you see 60-75 visits a day.
  12. It is a huge transition from hospital to school nurse. And although most days at school don't have crash and burn emergencies being the only medical person gives me huge stress. I had emergencies all the time at my hospital job, which gave me stress also but there were always nurses around to help in a true emergency. I am always afraid that I've missed a form, care plan, emergency med etc.. but I am just trying to take it day by day. I read some posts from the SN forum and they feel less stress than when they were in the hospital. I just feel my stress is different. I am in a busy middle school where some kids may not get everything they need at home, and I feel mental health is a huge issue. I'm still deciding if it is a fit for me too!
  13. I wear school spirit tees and scrub pants. I was helping a student to the BR 2 x daily last year and just feel scrubs were more appropriate. I sometimes wear jeans on Friday. I do think it makes us recognizable and it is a no brainer.

Greetings to another school year. I wasn't sure I would be back, but here I am. I hear the 2nd year is quite a bit better than the 1st. Did you all find this to be true? I just have so many issues last year with an asthma related death (not at school), anaphylaxis, intoxicated student, EMS called 5x!!! Now I find myself constantly worried about an emergency. I wasn't this bad last year. But I just feel so liable this year and worried about what is next. Is this normal? I've gotten used to the hours M-F and I like going in at 8am instead of 6am in the hospital, but I feel stressed even more about being the only medical person. Anyway...any tips or words from you wise ones appreciated!!

I feel like the reports/ health conditions are priority. I reach out to parents via email to ask for health care plans for chronic conditions, asthma, food allergy. I try to get all of the parents to bring in signed copies of action plans from physician before the kids return to school. That does not happen. But then I go through and make sure I'm aware of what these kids have so I can be prepared. Next of course I try and get immunizations in as they come in. Its crazy at the beginning. This is my 2ns year, so its a bit better. This forum saved me!! Good luck!
