"Nurse Appreciation Week" gifts from employer

We combine Nurses' Week with Hospital Day. The nurses get special gifts, the whole hospital gets a Texas size BBQ. There is some sort of recognition every day for a week. We are having "Oscars for Nurses" with booths carrying movie themes that will teach nurses (or anyone interested in nursing) about certifications, benefits, clinical ladder, stuff like that. Popcorn and prizes. The whole hospital celebrates for a week and we look forward to it. Also seems to mark the end of "busy season".

I know we have to consider administration's side of this also....I have had them say they were truly embarrassed by what they were able to offer employees....so I try to consider that also.

I am asked to give $3 to contribute to a basket made by the Float Nurses. Nearly every unit it doing it. We buy the baskets. A basket from each unit that participates will be raffled off to a nurse or aide.

Now doesn't that seem lovely. We buy our own gifts! Gets administration out of alot, now doesn't it?

Nursing Week begins May 12 - 16 / 03.

Dinner $30.00 pp, includes wine at your table. Guest speaker on the 15th. Night out but at your own price.

Hospital has this Nursing Excellence Awards and you can nominate a special nurse for either their:

leadership

mentorship

skills

etc...

It is usually the same people ever year being nominated. You submit a 500 word or less essay on that person.

I'll let you know if it's been a repeat since it isn't til next week.

Anyhow,

regardless to each and every one of you HAPPY NURSES WEEK each and every shift.

We are promised a Nurses week. Facials one day(of course that means something totally diferent to me). Neck messages another day. unit specific the next day. Then a bbq at the end for all shifts. This is a great improvement for our hospital.

I wanted to do something gift wise a little different this year. So we bought ceramic cookie jars, filled with cookies for a the gift. They are very pretty if I say so myself.

We also put out a ballot to the nurses to vote for other nurses on 10 different categories. Most professional, most compassionate, best assessment skills etc. The winner of the "Florence Nightingale" award will get a little bigger gift. I can't quite believe how excited they were over the voting. It should be alot of fun.

We'll have a couple of food things throughout the week too.

No mention here...yet. although one year we got mugs with the hospital motto and crest on it. The usually have a bagal breakfast one day and another the docs give the nurses a breafast and they vote on one nurse as I think it is as nurse of the year, but nothing yet this year...oh well.....I am never on it seems when they have the food things and we haven't recieved a gift in years....at least in my heart I know I give the best damned care I can. Another year at my major teaching hospital and no mention of nurses week. We didnt receive anything last year. Not even a pat on the back. I guess i should assume the same for this year!!! Happy Nurses Week everyone!!

My husband and my parents usually get me something though!!!

like zudy, i am much more impressed with the way my hospital treats me on a daily basis than with the often small tokens they present on nurses week. i am a travel nurse who has spent a total of almost three years at my present assignment...they treat us right! additionally, for nurses week, they give candy, pop, etc., every day and night, and then the suits come in and serve up a real repast for both shifts x 2.

We are not only getting nothing, we are GIVING stuff. I am shocked.

We are having a dinner party, at which the nurses are donating money to the hospital.

We are also having a breakfast. The nurses are "welcoming the rest of the hospital" to stop by and eat food served up by nurses.

I'm disgusted. The pen and pencil sets and lunch bags don't mean much to me. But I can't believe that the nurses at my hospital are starting the precedent of nurses week being about what more WE can do instead of about the hospital appreciating us.
