Wow. No one has started such a thread yet?
After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days, apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.
Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week, by the end of April.

It would be life affirming for me if people could just drop the discussion of cash payment, restore affirmative action and just call it a day. Legacy status will probably never go away..how would a college get a library these days:)?
Hear, hear? After all, nothing's stopping them from making reparations on their own. Why not just continue to do what they've been doing since the beginning of affirmative action?
If it's not government mandate, wouldn't it count as protected political speech?
After watching the bud light clown show, I'm interested to see how other organizations handle the change.
I find myself wondering what ALEC has been up to.
As for cash payments, I think it needs to stay in the mix. People gotta feed their kids. Higher wages would help with that.
Need clarification. What group is the Who that's being stopped from making reparations on their own? Who's freedom of speech are we speaking about. You are free to distribute your cash:) As I've said, my family wasn't here and had nothing to do with the slave trade and never owned slaves. We were digging up turnips somewhere in Europe. The poorest people need more education if they want to get higher wages. I'd rather see my tax dollars go to sending someone to truck driving school than just put the money in their hands.

Not sure what you're asking. The "who" I'm referring to are the organizations required to adopt affirmative action policies who are now off the hook. I will be interested in seeing who continues to make an effort now that legal penalties no longer apply. Also interested to see whether the policies of those who do make the effort will be challenged as unconstitutional based on this decision.
As for your ancestors ... they, like mine, came here to cash in on an economy built largely by slaves on stolen land with looted resources. We are living off the profits of those foundational crimes.
I understand the distinction you are getting at. Most of us can say the same thing. It doesn't change the moral responsibility to heal the damage, including the financial damage.
QuotePresident Joe Biden's economic policies drove an unexpected economic surge that has forced Morgan Stanley to make a "sizable upward revision" in its GDP forecasts.
Biden's 2021 infrastructure bill has created "a boom in large-scale infrastructure,” wrote MS analysts, while domestic business investment "is rebounding, led by manufacturing.”
I think inflation, high interest rates and other problems are going to be around, but I'll take whatever good news I get.

I was talking about who people who will be assigned to mete out the money to individuals. I stand my opinion that I would prefer the money to be spent on scholarships and making public schools places where kids want to hang out, swim, see a play in a library, etc. Give all the kids in the neighborhood the opportunity to earn a decent living.

Right. And others want their tax dollars to do more of this or less of that. We decide the minutia of that with our votes. Historically, the notion of 'give all a chance' has often translated into not much benefit to the already disadvantaged groups and communities.
I think that we should believe that we can do all of the things that make life better here rather than believing in the scarcity and austerity for the masses model of conservative fiscal policy. We have proven quite nicely that trickle down prosperity doesn't work. I think we should stop using that as our point of reference.
You all might have missed this Friday afternoon news. I guess Biden finally realized he needed to fix the public perception of him on this issue.

I didn't miss it. The conservative press has been hounding him about it for a while now. I'm not understanding how a private family issue is news worthy of comment. I suppose it shows that he isn't about "family values" that are so valued by Republicans? To me it's clearly deflection because they support an indicted man that was an adulterer that paid off a Media stay to stay silent about it. But that was a private matter as well.

I would agree that an attempt to repair racist systems and roadblocks is a portion of reparation.
