Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Anybody thinking about El Centro/ Northlake in the DCCCD for Jan 2006?

Is anyone taking their CPR class this friday? I'll be there!

Uggh, I'm getting nervous here too!! Not too much longer til we find out!

I am an out of county student, too.

I think it will be $66 from $60.

Is it $60 now? I don't remember....chemistry has my mind baffled. I guess I did turn in $240 to my scholarship counselor for my chem class.

Maybe $50 was what it was when I first applied for my scholarship. So, the tuition will jump from $30 in-county to $66 out-of-county. I guess I need to set up a separate savings account to save money for my last 1 or 2 semesters. lol

TXMOM....I took it before I turned my application in. Have fun!

for those of you who think you can't afford a University....

You get a LOT and I mean a LOT more finaincial aid at a University. You will only get about 1200 a semester TOPS at a junior college, you will get as much as 9k at a University. About 3 to 5k goes to tuition adn fees and books, the rest is used for housing, food etc. No you DONT have to live in a dorm, and no you DONT have to be pitifully poor!!!!! You get more grant money and more federal student loan money for a university.

Now bear in mind - even if you take out loans, there are plenty of loan repayment programs and sign on bonuses for nurses, so you won't have those loans for very long!!!!

DON'T rule out going to a University because CC is cheaper. You end up with less to live on!!!

Just wondering what school you are going to try to attend? I am so glad there is someone else out there that's in the same situation I am in. Are you going to NL or do you want to attend Brookhaven? I would be so glad to have a study buddy. I think I am going to take Math in the spring. What about you?

You are doing exactly what I am doing. I am taking all pre-reqs and all support courses so that I will be ready to apply for 2010, when my youngest also starts kinder. Good luck!!

But when you have to work the aid isn't as generous. They don't support people that have to work. At least not what I have tried. I guess I could get loans but those suck!! I have a scholarship for when I transfer to get my Masters at TWU but until then I am doing it all on my own.

That depends on how much you are earning of course. You wont know what you actually qualify for until until you apply.

Also - do not accept the first FA offer you get - tell them you need more, you would be surprised at what they will give you just for asking.

I handle my own and 3 of my kids FA stuff now - Just because we asked, they have occasionally doubled the amount originally offered. My son got 2 more loans than they had offered him initially. (And one of those loans turns into a grant upon graduation if he meets certain requirements such as a minimum GPA and max hours)

They DO support people who have to work - you just have to apply, and be persistent!

I would NOT rule out applying to TWU (or UTA or any other public university) for perceived lack of Financial Aid - fill out that FAFSA and apply for admission and see what happens. I think you will be very surprised.

Don't let higher tuition and fees scare you off. And don't let whatever the DFA counselor at the Community College told you influence you - I have often found that incorrect info is dispensed broadly!

Thank you for the advice :) I have filled out the FAFSA and the DFA told me I make too much money to qualify. The deal is that I have to work so I really can't help how much money I make, which is not too much by the way :)

You're welcome! Just make sure you talk to someone at a university, and not a community college.
