Hey All,

I have to write a scientific methods paper for pysch. Please tell me what you think about male nurses in OB, specifically the delivery room. I am not looking to start a huge debate just taking a survey.

Thanks Everyone!!!

One of the best OB managers that I ever worked with was a guy, and this was in Detroit.

I think male nurses are just as good as female nurse. What would be the diffrence between a male nurse being in the room or a male doctor?? Either way they're both guys so it shouldn't make much difference. Good luck on ur paper.

Qualified, competent and compassionate nurses can do ob regardless of their sex.

The patients comfort level should be considered, but a good nurse is a good nurse.

If i'm a pt., for any reason, i want good, competent nurses. Female or male, i don't care.

When I gave birth to both of my girls, I was at a teaching hospital. So, there were men & women doctors/nurses/aides everywhere. Who cares, as long as they know what they are doing, or know who to call if they don't. :chuckle

The first one ended up being an emergency forceps delivery (they told me they didn't have time for a C-section.) Six years later, right after the second one was born, I started hemorrhaging. (Quite a scene to watch in the mirror!)

Needless to say, for both births there were med students, student nurses....all kinds of people coming out of the woodwork! (Cleaning people could have come in at that point, and it wouldn't have fazed me...lol) If a lady actually has a problem with men being in the room at that point, I'm surpised they got pregnant in the first place!!!!! :rotfl:

I don't see a problem with male nurses in OB. I would imagine that most patients would not have a problem with it either.

I've worked with some fantastic male nurses in the past and have seen it all, been there and done that. If the male nurse is competent in OB then I have no qualms whatsoever working with them. I've worked with them in med/surg and in the NICU where I floated one day. There were a couple of real burly football player types who were absolutely wonderful with those tiny little babies.

I'm an L&D nurse and would gladly welcome a competent, hard-working, team playing male nurse any day!!!!

Ditto to all the above.

Like other posters have said, I don't see a difference between a male nurse and a male doctor, or between a male nuse and a female nurse for that matter!
