Playing Cards

Published

Any WA nurses out there who can explain Senator Maureen Walsh's diatribe about nurses in critical care access hospitals "playing cards a considerable amount of time?"

What was that about? https://www.wsna.org/news/2019/senator-states-that-nurses-probably-play-cards-for-a-considerable-amount-of-the-day-in-amending-rest-breaks-bill

If any WA nurses are playing cards on duty, please shape up. It makes us all look bad.

(that's a joke, btw).

I do not support some of the type of backlash I'm seeing online (mostly elsewhere).

Discussions, debating, and pointing out the erroneous thinking are helpful.

I do think her words betray disregard (if not disdain) for people she thinks of as workers - and also her ignorance of the workings of CAHs.

But some of the reactions out there are not helping our cause whatsoever, and most definitely do not ask anyone to respect nurses. They practically beg for additional disdain. If you're not careful, you can easily out-vile the person with whom you're disgusted. ?

I heard she added an amendment to the bill to require nurses to work 8hr shifts (not 12) and added the card comment on purpose to make sure nurses would react and vote down the bill, which requires uninterrupted rest breaks.

She could be a master manipulator or she could be clueless (being clueless is really a concern if you're a Senator, though!).

Idk. I think nurses are smart and funny and she gave us some material for hilarious jokes and memes.

Gotta run. Intense game, I think I have a royal flush here.

And here I was thinking if any WA nurses are playing cards on duty where are you working and more important, are you hiring??

What I know of her words/demeanor, I don't agree with. I think she had an epic fail with a sarcastic attempt at some sort of quasi reductio ad absurdum. The fact that she argued from the particular perspective she did, and in the manner that she did, betrays her loyalties and concerns one way or another.

I have no way of knowing whether the card comment was carefully calculated. To me it sounded like an adamant declaration that nurses at CAHs just don't work that hard, and so no poor C's anywhere should have to worry about breaks or meals for "the workers." ? The fact that it isn't true is almost beside the point given the utter ridiculousness of the final conclusion that she wanted people to come to.

Vile, to be sure.

I agree. I think they can effectively communicate the fallacy and help put the spotlight on the disdain for nurses aka workers, too.

Blowing up people's social media with hatefulness and aiming to ruin each other are another matter and are actions that I generally cannot support. You know, two wrongs don't make a right, etc. I believe it. I think if more people could see the sense in it, the world would be a better place.

Wait, y'all don't play craps on the OR tables in between patients?

I so agree. We need to take the high road and remain professional. I cringe when nurses act badly.

I work at a critical access facility and there is not relief if we take breaks because there is only 1 nurse per shift with 1 support staff for 9 medical detox clients. By law, in order to take a break a person that is the same licensure or better must relieve you so we can't take a break. But! We get paid for our breaks and are we fine with it. Even with only 9 pts though we are still running around. They should either be able to take their breaks or get paid if they can't. And no, we definitely don't play cards unless it's helpful for the pt to distract them therapeutically.

Getting paid for missed breaks misses the point. The fatigue-related errors and failures to rescue are not mitigated by extra pay. This whole issue revolves around optimizing patient safety with legislation of mandatory rest periods.

What do you mean, between? Unless you have a pediatric patient, usually there is enough room for all the cards.

From CNN:

State senator slammed for saying nurses 'play cards' for 'considerable amount' of day

Quote

Washington state senator has drawn the ire of nurses after remarks she made suggesting that nurses in smaller hospitals "probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day."

The Washington State Senate considered a bill Tuesday, SHB 1155, that would provide nurses with uninterrupted meal and rest periods.

"By putting these types of mandates on a critical access hospital that literally serves a handful of individuals, I would submit to you those nurses probably do get breaks. They probably play cards for a considerable amount of the day," Washington state Senator Maureen Walsh said on Tuesday during a debate on the Washington state Senate floor.

Walsh, a Republican, was arguing in support of an amendment that would exempt critical access hospitals, in rural areas, and hospitals with less than 25 beds from the bill....

...The Washington State Nurses Association called Walsh's remarks "demeaning" and said there is "zero logic" in covering nurses in some hospitals, "while leaving others without any protections."

"No, Senator, nurses are not sitting around playing cards. They are taking care of your neighbors, your family, your community," Mathew Keller, WSNA's director of nursing practice and health policy, said in a post on the union's website. ...

...

Walsh had also introduced an amendment to the bill that would prohibit nurses from working more than eight hours.

"Well, if we have an issue with nurses getting tired, let's quit letting them do 12-hour shifts, let's let them do 8-hour shifts. Like most standard shifts are," Walsh said on Tuesday. "Twelve hours, I know they want it, but then they come back and they start talking out of both sides of the mouth and telling us how tired they are."...

Attention Washington state nurses: Please educate your legislators!!!
