Plant-based (vegan) mandate for NY hospitals

What do you think of the new bill passed in New York State requiring vegan options on the menu?

It does appear to be a political endorsement of this diet over others, such as paleo, which had benefited many as well. While I definitely favor choice for patients, this law is promoting a plant-based as superior.

Also, whenever government imposes another mandate, it creates an expensive bureaucracy and burdensome red tape.

Interesting. People have reversed their fatty liver on keto. Actually, I'm going to go so far as to say that I doubt this is true. It is much more likely that she already had a fatty liver.

My husband reversed his hyperlipidemia and brought his A1c from 9.something to 6.something doing keto

That's awesome! My post won't let me edit, but I want to clarify that I meant that I doubt it was true that someone developed fatty liver from a keto diet.

I wish we had better options on night shift. I know I can pack my own food but sometimes I just don't have the time at home. So many unhealthy options on nights.

I think the plant-based option is a wonderful idea. It is very heart-healthy, low-fat and fiber. As long as patient's want to try it to improve their health more power to them!

Well, crap. I try to minimize my animal consumption but didn’t think of gel caps. I’m not kidding. Jello/gelatin is made from animals and I didn’t make the connection. Gotta do better in 2020.

Forgive me if this sounds stupid but is there such a thing as synthetic gelatin that can/may be used for medications? Maybe by now it's even the norm? No idea, just thinking out loud.

If you buy either online at a place like Vitacost, or at Whole Foods or a local food co-op, the product label will state the ingredient for the gel-cap.

Agar-agar and carrageenan are derived from algae and seaweed, respectively. (Not a vegan... just in a relationship with a very devout Muslim. Gelatin as mentioned, is collagen traditionally boiled off of pigs’ feet or other parts containing a lot of bones/connective tissues.)

Let's see how that works. I'm sitting in the corner and watch.

I dont have a problem with any hospital serving vegan or other options for patients. But, i think the the gov mandating it is definitely over reach. With all the push for customer service the hospital would more than likely provide if enough ppl requested/complained. I am sure that the diverse areas of the state would be able to best provide for their specific area without intervention from the gov. Also seems like the Physician group is more interested in animal rights than necessarily people eating vegan (even though they do go hand in hand).

What they will do when there will be over population of animals in the future?

My rehab pts, many of them, complained how terrible the veggies were. I'd say, the veggies they ate looked like the vegetables I cooked for the farm pigs.?. I didn't tell them about it.

leaving hospital diets up to patients might not be the best plan. Although, you may be the first nurse on this forum to advocate basing decision making on Press Ganey scores.

Can you back up your claim that any physician groups care more about animal rights than patient nutrition? Honestly, that's a pretty bizarre statement.
