Phi Theta Kappa... is it worth the $55 bucks?

I've been invited to join Phi Theta Kappa at my school. I'd honestly never heard of it until I got the letter. I understand it is the community college version of Phi Beta Kappa, the honors organization.

I have to admit the $55 sign up fee seems a little steep on my poor student budget.

Does anyone have any positive experiences with this organization outside of getting to wear the honor cord at graduation? Will it help me get a job etc?

Thanks for any info.

I joined when in school, and it has made me look "more desireable" on an application. whatever that means! lol i did it for self gratification too, it looks good on a resume. I've had many comments and compliments during interviews and such which was nice. But not necessary for job advancement, etc..

I've been in PTK for almost a year. I did it mostly for the "achievement" milestone that it is. Plus, once you fill out your info they will let colleges know when you're planning to transfer to a 4 year college for scholarship opportunities. There are some scholarships that are only available to students that are PTK members only. To see if a school that you're interested in is involved, go to their site. They seem to add about 2 schools a month and each scholarship is different.

Last semester there was a blood drive and a parade that they wanted members to participate in. None of it was mandatory and very casual. They also make it very clear that you don't have to do anything at all to retain membership.

To this point I haven't received a single envelope of junk mail. I was expecting to and was pleasantly surprised.

Is it worth it? Sorry to chime in twice but gotta say that it depends on how big a sacrifice a $55 investment is. It can't hurt if you've got it to spend.

PBK is the academic honor society. STT is nursing specific. The certificate will look great in your office and your resume will be enhanced, but I am not sure if there are advantages other than bragging rights. However, I am a member of STT and have access to research engines and publishing opportunities. At the time I joined I saw no use in it, but now I do. So, I say GO for it, as your career changes over time. Plus, you earned it!

I think some of you have me convinced. I don't mind some volunteering but I thought I might have to tutor people (I don't know where I got that idea). I'm not so sure that I could do that.

And, second, I really didn't think it mattered after college. After seeing some of your replies, I guess it does.

Honestly, I payed the 50 bucks and forgot all about it!

BTW, I am so rude! I forgot to tell you congratulations!!!! You deserve the honor for all your hard work! :balloons: :balloons:

IMHO.........this is mostly about bragging rights. I joined and after graduation I found out that I never got any of the "goodies" I was supposed to have received such as the Pin a Certificate and card. I was also supposed to have my transcripts stamped Phi Theta Kappa, and they were not. After 60.00 and several phone calls to my college.........too bad for me. They (the college) are not responsible for the stamping......huge run around.

Why not join? I understand the fee can be steep if you are struggling, however it only serves to benefit you in the long run. I mentioned it to my Dad and he was so proud of me that HE paid it for me. I never was forced to do anything with the group..I just paid and got my certificate. I also got to wear a gold tassel and shawl at graduation.

No big deal-but it does look good when you transfer and on an entry resume.

I am a current member of PTK. Got my membership by getting straight A's on 18 credits of sciences (Microbiology, Developmental Psych, Nutrition, Organic/Inorganic Chemistry) one quarter. Join if it's not to steep. I joined for the bragging rights. Got myself a T-shirt and sweatshirt from their website too.

No experiences though if it would help in anything. Sorry.

Congratulations for all your hard work.

I was PTK vice president one year, and secretary another, when going for my generic associate's. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as you might guess. Iwent to their annual convention, participated in the political processes/was a delegate at the convention, participated in fundraisers, etc. I enjoyed the fellowship there.

But in nursing school, I cannot imagine ANYONE having the time to dedicate to PTK, so many just pay their dues and wear the gold stoll when they graduate. I think it can be a plus when applying to nursing school if you are not already in, also. No, that is not what it's all about, but then, it is great for the resume. The active members realize and accept this (at least in our Chapter). I recommend it, HIGHLY, especially if you have the time to become involved. It was a wonderful experience for me. :)

I did it for resume enhancement. So far all I have gotten out of it is a certificate and being published on the National Deans List.
