Phi Theta Kappa... is it worth the $55 bucks?

I've been invited to join Phi Theta Kappa at my school. I'd honestly never heard of it until I got the letter. I understand it is the community college version of Phi Beta Kappa, the honors organization.

I have to admit the $55 sign up fee seems a little steep on my poor student budget.

Does anyone have any positive experiences with this organization outside of getting to wear the honor cord at graduation? Will it help me get a job etc?

It was $80 for me to join, and I did pay it. I know that it does look good on a resume or scholarship app, plus PTK has scholarships available. Mostly, I just joined for selfish reasons-I blew a lot of things when I was younger and have worked hard for my achievements.

I thought Nursing's honor society was Sigma Theta Tau?

Anyway, Jenn, you asked if it would help you get a job - I seriously doubt it. It might help you get into a higher degree program, but not with a job.

PTK is the community college honor society... not specific for nursing. I had the opportunity and turned it down. My instructor told me it does make a difference on a resume and will help with matriculating to the BSN program.

really!? i turned it down too. :uhoh21: oh well if i have the 60 bucks during fall maybe i'll look into it.

I got the invite too, but didn't have $70 to spare. At my school, as long as you were invited and still hold a GPA that's good enough, you can join at any time. I tell myself maybe one day, lol.

Nope.

Sigma Theta Tau took my enrollment money and now send me all sorts of donation requests for all sorts of "worthy causes." If you love junk mail, by all means join em.

I was invited to join several months ago, after my first semester of pre-reqs. It seemed kind of hokey at first, but after I found out that one of my favorite teachers (for A&P II) was the Chapter Advisor, I decided to shell out the $40. He said it may help with advancement later on in my career. It's a one time fee so I figured 'what the hey'.

It hasn't cost me a second of my time yet, but I would get involved if asked.

I wouldn't spend the money. I figure if my grades are good enough for them, then any schools I apply to later will see that on my transcript. Also, your GPA can go on your resume along with Dean's List/President's List and those are free! I would need the $ for gas, food and diapers.:chuckle
