why do people want to be a nurse

Published

Hello everyone,

I hope all is well with you.:monkeydance: I have read so many horror stories about being a nurse. It makes me wonder why the nurseing schools in many areas are jammed packed with students wanting to enter them. It is hard to believe there is a shotage. Also, when in school and doing your clinicals, don't you see the stressed out nurses?

I can't believe I am still considering nursing school after reading horrible threads about being a hospital nurse. Do I think it wouldn't happen to me? Oh God, what am I doing?:uhoh3:

Have a great day.

Do not get discouraged. I too get nervous reading these posts. I still plan on finishing nursing school though. Every type of career has its ups and downs. I am sure if this was a forum for teachers we would hear some horror stories also. I figure maybe bed side nursing might not be what I want in the future but I can always go into another path of nursing. Who knows I may love bed side nursing. Anyway, do not worry every body is different and nursing might end up being a great decision.:lol2:

I got discouraged even before I graduated from high school with all the nurses saying "why do you want to do this" or "I wouldn't go into nursing if I were you." And I am so glad that I ignored them. There were times during school that I would doubt what I was doing, and working as a nurse tech, I often was stressed and would again doubt myself. And yes there are times that I get stressed now in working as a nurse. But I couldn't be HAPPIER with what I am doing. My advice is to ignore those people who put off the bad vibes. If nursing is your calling, do it. Don't let others make you doubt yourself.

i was burnt out on my construction career when a couple of nurse friends convinced me i'd make a good one.....positives....being of service feels great...job security....soooo many places to potentially work and areas to work in....havent started my travel career...yet...but that was a big motivator for me....cant think of another career w/ as much demand and flexability....negatives....runnin' like mad when staffing is short....distastful cleanup...every career has its ups and downs...some people i know who made a career out of what they loved {beauty work, fishing boat} ended up not lovin' it so much cause they did it toooo much...i have no regrets and would recommend nursing to anyone.....who's not faint hearted...just kiddin'...come on and join us

In many ways, this is indeed the reality of nursing. In many others it's isolated incidences and you shouldn't judge the entire field by one person's experience.

We come here to vent so it is slanted towards the negative. But don't be discouraged by what you read on a message board. Nursing has many rewards and advantages that keep me showing up day after day.

Good luck to you.

Yes, in your clinicals you're going to come across stressed out nurses and students can be very judgemental. Try to not judge the entire profession by what you see in clinicals.

I've read many of the threads in which nurses are warning others away from the field. One thing that I've noticed, though, is that the questions like "what would you choose/recommend in liu of nursing" generally go unanswered.

All professions have problems. Plus all professions treat the little person (entry-level staff) like dirt; nursing is no exception. Nursing is an exception in how much it pays an entry-level employee (Staff RN) and how fast an entry-level employee can move up! So those are my reasons and I am sure that it is a few of the reasons many career changers are choosing nursing.

Don't get me wrong, I like to help people and have done so in my past careers. However job opportunities, career advancement, and pay were lousy!

I agree- we do come here to vent and so the negative is what we talk about. Also, some of us have had a lot of years to accumulate horror stories!

Often, though, it's the job and not the career that's the problem. A change to a different facility or area of nursing can work wonders. Plus, there really is a lot of flexibility- you can change from one area to another or stay in one your whole career.

Don't give up before you start, and good luck to you!

Ok, here it goes........mainly because I want to be able to take care of my sick mother. There are other reasons, such as, enjoying helping others and job security!

I start nursing school in less than 2 weeks. I was stressing that I would go through all that school and end up not wanting to be a nurse. It's like I forgot all the reasons I wanted to do this in the first place. My mom gave me the best advice. She said I will learn a lot in nursing school, and even if it's not something I will do as a career, some of that knowledge will be valuable in everyday life...

It's not like I'm going for a advertising degree. If my future child falls off a bike and scrapes his or her knee, I'll know how to make a commercial about it...:uhoh3:

(Disclaimer: No offense to anyone out there with an advertising degree)

Surely, you must mean there were only a few answers, rather than completely unanswered, because I know I have answered such a question on many threads.

i can't think of too many professions where one is challenged mentally, physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.

and the $$'s good.
