Lack of Confidence, I don't think I can do this!!
I had my first clinical experience this week, and I was so terrified that I couldn't do anything, not bed baths, not mouth care, and not even waking the pt up! (pt was a hard sleeper) By the end of the day, I got a little more comfortable and was able to at least do feedings (pt needed total care). I am in the same boat as you, and I like that quote, I will have to learn to feel the fear, then do it anyway.

How many females are "peeking" in this forum?
Well, as a girl who currently works with a bunch of guys, (I work at a mail-order call center selling guitars, about to start nursing school), its kinda interesting to see how a guy works with a bunch of girls.

Had orientation today for RN program...heard something disturbing.
I heard that drop-out rates for most nursing schools are high... People have different reasons for quitting or failing. However, it seems to be that at the school I'm going to, they have a really high bar so the fail rate is high, but because they weed out the students that aren't doing well, the NCLEX pass rate is around 99% My friend said that on her first day of class, the teacher said to expect around 10 students less by the end. All we can do as students is to give it our best shot and hope we make it to the end...

She didn't mention anything about it being a full or half day. I guess we'll have to wait and see. However, I do know that we're supposed to read ahead on chapters 1-5 but I don't know which book(s).

Same one! Jocelyn Richey (spelling?) is the teacher. She seems like a good teacher, but still tough. She told a few of us that she will expect us to be very thorough when it comes to knowing meds.

why do people want to be a nurse
I start nursing school in less than 2 weeks. I was stressing that I would go through all that school and end up not wanting to be a nurse. It's like I forgot all the reasons I wanted to do this in the first place. My mom gave me the best advice. She said I will learn a lot in nursing school, and even if it's not something I will do as a career, some of that knowledge will be valuable in everyday life... It's not like I'm going for a advertising degree. If my future child falls off a bike and scrapes his or her knee, I'll know how to make a commercial about it... (Disclaimer: No offense to anyone out there with an advertising degree)

HCC Hillsborough Community College Roll-Call
Hey there! I'd just like to see who on allnurses.com is in the Tampa or Plant City HCC RN Program, either current, just accepted, or graduated... I'm starting this August as a new student, and hopefully this thread would be a great place for us to network with other HCC students online!

Nursing Surplus?
I know a lot of you out there have experienced the frustration of being short-staffed with the nursing shortage, but what about the nurses who have been working in the field for many many years. Has there ever been a nursing surplus? I heard that the pendulum swings back and forth between a nursing shortage and a nursing surplus, but I'm not sure how true this is. Can anyone out there enlighten me?

HCC Nursing Students
I was just accepted to HCC to start this Fall 2007. There is NO WAITING LIST! Basically, they take a look at your GPA for only your prerequisite classes and they take the highest ones. If there is a tie between students, they look at your total GPA for all your classes. Because they don't do waiting lists, the GPA's of applicants are different every time, so if you get rejected, just reapply for the next semester.
