the other day at work i was telling my peers about trying to find a med-surg job for a friend of mine. they did not believe that nurses could not get jobs if they really wanted them. i tried to explain about this site and that i see daily how hard it is right now. they kept saying they might not get what they want but they can always get a job. i hope none of them lose their jobs because everyone wants recent experience in whatever position they are appling for.

I think it definitely depends on the part of the country you are in. I think an experienced nurse shouldn't have nearly as much trouble finding work, as a new grad will. Especially if a new grad is wanting some hospital experience, they may have to wait/keep trying.

I believe you. My husband is working in Iowa; I'm in Kansas. The hospitals in the town he is in aren't hiring-period. I have been a nurse for 17 years, most recently a surgical/ortho/peds floor, but also skilled, oncology and dialysis. The two openings I've seen have been 1) Work 3 12-hour day shifts, 3 12-hour night shifts, or 2) Work an 8-hour shift with a combo of all three shifts in a two-week pay period. I'm not up to either of those, so I may be working at Home Depot or a florists' shop-who knows? I value what's left of my health too much to stress my body like that anymore. He only has three years until retirement; I may just wait it out where I am. I have eleven years left to work.

it is certainly slim pickings out there, esp. here in mississippi. i have a cousin who graduated recently and literally could not get a decent job that was worth a crap. i felt so sorry for her with all her loans and other financial problems new graduates have. she eventually bit the bullit and is working weekend option in new orleans, and even that job came by pure luck. after seeing all the new graduates that are doing their final clinical in my hospital constantly worry about job prospects (my hospital is on hiring freeze) i have been trying to inform people who are leaning towards nursing as a career move to be aware of the troubled employement outlook.

It definitely depends on the area and whether the new grad is flexible with their hours and speciality. For experienced nurses is it much easier. I've gotten two job offers in the past 6 months.

All people hear is about the nursing shortage and they don't realize that must be a few very select places and mostly for experienced nurses only. Southern Ca is overrun with nurses.

I remember hospitals were coming and bringing food etc. In the south FL area, new grad hiring is dead. There are plenty of jobs though for experienced nurses
Why does being able to pick from two jobs in the past six month "sux"? Because I didn't get a signing bonus?

I could have written this post! I keep telling my family and other fellow students how grateful I am to have a position secured before graduation because the job market is so rough right now, and they just roll their eyes and laugh
My area isn't experiencing as big of a fallout from the recession as other areas, and many of my classmates will have jobs, but there will be those that will not. Apparently denial isn't just a river in Egypt

Same here..I was telling my preceptor that my dream is to live in nyc, how I applied everywhere but there are no jobs, especially for new grads. She looked baffled and told me the nursing shortage is rampant in nyc and nurses are needed everywhere..lol I expect it from non-nurses but even some of our peers and colleagues are oblivious!

Yep I experienced the same very thing...people like that seriously drive me nuts..I have friends who thinks it is my fault that I cant find job and they think that once they graduate from Nursing school the job will be waiting for them...They used to think something was wrong with my resume (but they never took one glance at it but still came up with an idea that my resume must suck since I cant land a job but mind you I went to a professional resume writers but I guess they know better!!) then they start blaming my lack of experience..(I have this one friend who works in a hospital and is currently in the LPN program-so she flaunts her hospital gig at from of my face and think she she will have a job quaranteed after she graduates) I mean the list goes on and goes on,no one believes that the market is rough for the new grads
