Peers don't believe nurses can't get jobs...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

the other day at work i was telling my peers about trying to find a med-surg job for a friend of mine. they did not believe that nurses could not get jobs if they really wanted them. i tried to explain about this site and that i see daily how hard it is right now. they kept saying they might not get what they want but they can always get a job. i hope none of them lose their jobs because everyone wants recent experience in whatever position they are appling for.

Yes, I've said several times at work that I feel SO glad that I'm not a new grad nurse right now. I too remember the days of sign-on bonuses, relocation bonuses and "wooing" lunches for new grads.

I'm in the job market right now (we're relocating to a different state at the end of the month) and am not finding too much difficulty with the job hunt, as an experienced nurse. But again, I'm really glad I'm not a new grad right now!

Ya'll are scaring me. I'm looking at a nursing career due the IT sector off-source or flooded with cheap labor.

Tell me the over supply of nurses is more of a regional thing and not nation wide.

I mean some regions are still hiring but most states dont, unless you dont mind working in a very rural place for a year to gain experience...I'm a recent grad of May 2009...I couldnt find a hospital job for the life of me in my very urban home state...after 6 months I couldnt wait any longer for something to come up and decided to look across the country--nothing spectacular but I received some calls for an interview,so yes to sum up there are some jobs out there if you are willing to take a risk, pack up and move across the country.

I've been living in Texas for the past four-and-a-half years, but I am originally from California. I would like to return to California within the next few years, but the nursing job market in most parts of that state is horrid at the present time. So, for now, I am stuck in Texas where the nursing job market is faring slightly better.

I don't think anyone who isn't in this position understands. One of my friends who is nursing school said she isn't worried about finding a job after graduating. Obviously she must think I am doing something wrong since I have been looking for a year. I wasn't worried about finding a job when I was in school either. It took most people in my class 6+ months to find a job.

I have 20 years in varied specialties. Most recent 8 years in ER. I moved from Hawaii to Calif. for what was supposed to be a better opportunity for me to get ahead. I was fired on the last day of my orientation. I was left without the bonus promised to me and it took me 7 months to find temporary work in a prison. I am also doing per diem work in ER and the hours there are also limited. I could not fight the termination. I was fired for leaving the unit for one hour (my lunch hour) event though I had my area covered by an oncoming nurse and the okay from the charge nurse. She evidently went to the manager who told me we would discuss the issue later. Later never came and two weeks later I was fired. This termination prevented me from obtaining a position with the VA. I am trying to move back home but it has been difficult financially. I don't want to stay in corrections as it will limit my ability to get back into hospital nursing. Nursing isn't like it used to be where you could move around and get a job almost anywhere and be trained in different specialties. I am ready to get out of bedside nursing but don't know what else to do. Have considered finishing my masters, but at my age I don't think it would be worth the time, effort and money for the amount of years I have left to work. People and nurses with jobs really don't understand how difficult it is even for seasoned nurses to find employment right now. My best friend is also unemployed and having difficulty finding a job.

I left a long and lucrative career in IT for those very reasons - all the outsourcing overseas and importing of people willing to work for what I last earned around 1992. I decided to make the switch before the economic downturn and then several months into school, hospitals stopped hiring new grads.

I live in a very large urban area and the pickings here are rather slim.

My best friend and I are applying to Saudi for jobs. We are that desperate!

Im only a student in Michigan, but in my A&P class today there were a couple ladies talking about nurses they know who were laid off and how hard getting a job around here is right now. We are only students, but it sounded like the conversations I hear on these boards all the time.

An employee from the unemployment department made that comment to me during an interview, as if they did not believe my predicament. I must be the only nurse in one of the two largest metropolitan areas of the US to have ever had the audacity to start an unemployment claim. It only took them four months to deal with my claim that I didn't file until I had been out of work for a month. Can you imagine telling the landlord to wait five months for the rent? Yes, Dorothy, there is a nursing shortage.
