I sent 7th grade shot letters home in May, emailed the parents, posted on our PTO newsletter in May.

Emailed on my last day before summer break.

Emailed when I returned from summer break (over 100 delinquent).

Emailed one day before schedule pick-up.

Emailed Friday before school began.

Emailed & sent home exclusion letter the second day of school (Exclusion date 9/3).

Mom shows up on Tuesday (second day of school) and now has to re-enroll her 2 - 7th graders.

Hi mom, The students will need to get their Tdap & MCV4 before we can enroll them. (Go through how many times & ways I notified parents) Well we are "All natural" now so can I get that form so they don't have to get the shots? I set a link to the state immunization site (mom pulls up my email and I show the link) where you could order that form, however it could take 2 weeks to get it. "I don't have time for that, do you have someplace I can go?" Why yes, here is a list of nearby clinics (which was also on my email) - this one is only $10/shot.

Friday - students still have not been registered.

Student brought in Asthma Action Plan without med, said mom would bring inhaler in. I look and see only mom signed form, no doctors info or signature. Mom has yet to return call.

Our head middle school teacher explained a health policy to mom. Mom flips out. Mom says she refuses to comply.

I explain the exact same policy to mom. Mom says "that makes sense." Complies immediately.

It must be my special day.

YES!! Yes to all!!

How about:

I want to be called EVERY time my little pumpkin is in your office. 99.5 IS a fever for my little angel. How dare you not call me the instant She/he crosses your threshold?

*Call parent immediately for a visit for a legit high fever*

"Oh, gee, well, I am at work and can't leave for like 3 hours. She/he's going to have to rest there until then. I can get there by 3:30. (dismissal is 3:05, idk who is staying with little pumpkin, but it isn't me...)

And place big bets that little pumpkin will be in school with bells on full of tylenol the next day despite you telling parent that they need to be out s/s free for 24 hrs.

A family where the child's RAST was positive for oats and sesame, but because "family hx" has an epi pen for peanuts and pineapple as well; Plus asthma - Mom somehow gets an albuterol HFA for LD who has autism and cannot coordinate breaths and brings that in, but no order. I call the doc, request the med order for the HFA with a Spacer (i have some on hand, works quite well if the kid can tolerate the mask for a minute, which the doc responds with "How the hell do you think you're going to admin that to this child who cannot coordinate breaths??". I wanted to respond "I would figure it out, but why the hell did you rx it if you thought that?!"

I get the med order for the neb solution, which mom brings, but it's expired. "Well, I would give it! Why can't you?" ?

Excluded from first day of school for delinquent immunizations (8 total notifications went home starting beginning of May)
Father calls and rants: "My children have never been vaccinated because I don't believe in poisoning their bodies, you don't need a new exemption every 2 years, I know because I always do them, you only have to do it once, I was in the military and a firefighter and I know because I have done my research"

End of the week comes in with a completed exemption form. Show him how little darling has all the shots except this year's requirements and has never before had an exemption

Father: "Oh yeah, little darling already has all the shots and that's why I don't want them to give any more"

Me:
"Hi this is the school nurse. Everything is ok but just wanted to let you know that Timmy bumped his head on the wall while standing in line. He's ok, no bump or bruise, he's been resting with an ice pack for a little bit and now he's ready to go back to class."

Parent:
"Oh NO!! Do I need to come get him? Is he bleeding out of his ears? Did he vomit? Do I need to take him to the doctor RIGHT NOW??"

Me:
"No, as I just stated, he's ok and he's ready to go back to class now"

?

(* we are required to call parent for every single head bump even if it is nothing)

Parents(at home) be like...oh hunny, you just go to the nurse if your tummy hurts and I'll be right there to pick up you, my poor little guy.

Parents (when the nurse calls 45 seconds into the school day)be like... I didn't actually mean that I'd pick him up, but I'm not telling him that, so you need to telling him to go back to class.

The famous " get out of school free card" Guaranteed visit to the nurse's office the moment the kid sets foot in the school. Love when you call home and then the parents are upset at you for calling!! Sometimes there are not enough eye rolls and face palms to describe a day in the life of a school nurse!!!!!!!
