Ok guys, I have been a nurse since 2007 and since then I have gained about 50lbs.
Yes, I know I am not lying. It is very true. I used to fit in to xs scrubs. I work nights because it is convenient for my family and babysitting and my husbands schedule.
Tomorrow I start the dvd beachbody programs and hope for the best. It makes me sad that even at work people around me comment on how much weight I have gained. I can't fit into my clothes.
working nights I always find excuses to eat sweets or other bad things for weight.
Diet really is the key, as well as cutting caloric intake. Read the nutrition labels because looks are deceiving. Clean eating goes a long way.Yes, exercise is important, but 80 percent is a healthy diet. Since I started my job 18 months ago, I gained 10 pounds, lost 5. Not a lot of weight, but I still noticed it. Every day at work: cookies, chocolates, cakes that either staff or families bring in. All adds up, and I've stopped eating that stuff at work.
Of course, everything in moderation. I still eat cookies, cake and other stuff just not every day.
I'm lucky I don't really have a sweet tooth. I will eat sweets if it's worth it, but I don't need it.
I tend to put olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper on salads.
I eat mostly "clean" and have stated to clean it up more recently.
My biggest problem is portion control. I also do the nurse shovel it in thing.
And wine. Always wine.

Yep, all that. Every bit describes me as well.
I just pre packed some lunches for me: spinach, hard boiled egg, 1/2 packet of salmon (the ones in the tear out pouches ready to eat), and some cherry tomatoes. Also some celery and peanut butter. I have a feeling I will eat some tomorrow and crave a pizza, but oh well gotta start somewhere I guess. I lost about 15 lbs when my main strategy was don't eat anything until dinner but I get migraines when I don't eat so that didn't last long!!!
I haven't gained weight (I have always been overweight since high school) but I certainly would like to lose some. I always eat whatever is convenient and we have had so many people quitting lately I probably gained 5lbs on the going away parties! I need more self control! I work day shift so it's a lot easier for me. I remember working 3rd as a RCA and nothing hit the spot like a big bowl of freshly microwaved ramen. Good luck! I wish everyone trying to be healthier the best! We are what we eat! (I'm a pizza)
This.Ever since I started doing a low carb, high fat diet, I lost 3 pounds water weight in 1 week. That's all I could lose though (went from 109 to 106 so any more weight would have been unhealthy), but that kind of diet makes you shed water first, then you start to burn the fat. My mom lost 10 pounds in a couple weeks after I convinced her to try it.
Very true. If you do actual Atkins (vs. no white carb) the initial weight lost is water. I'm trying to remember the science, 4 parts water to every 1 part "X". ??? It's been a long day, I forget. Then you stall. It's supposed to happen, it's a given, it is how it works. Then when the stall is over that is when fat is being burned.
Glycogen??
Then you're insane.
Agree!!! "Like" True! Sweet potatoes are just gross.
My advice: allow yourself the pizza. That was my saving grace when I was doing the diet/exercise thing. To know there was the occasional "cheat"
I allowed myself 2 cheat days in the week. So Saturday and Sunday were my cheat days. Which was the one thing I looked forward to all week. That was what helped me keep on track.
Notice I am using past tense. I moved in with my boyfriend and his family since I moved 2 and a half hours away to be closer to him and I can't move into my apartment until the 29th. It's been harder for me to stay on track here since his mom does all the cooking and its harder for me to count carbs when I don't cook it myself.
So on the 29th, back to healthy eating I go!
I'm about to start my weight loss journey as well. I've done weight watchers in the past and I always lose the weight. I have learned that when I'm craving something, I just go ahead and eat it. If I don't, I tend to eat any and everything to get rid of the craving. When the craving doesn't go away, I end up eating it anyway. I learned I eat less if I do it that way and it really helps! Not sure if that makes any sense at all:D

It does! Actually, I had a friend who did the same thing and I adopted that, but only if I was STRONGLY craving it to the point that no other food could satisfy. It helped me from eating a butt load of things before I ate what I was craving anyway.
There is an art to it though. You can't allow yourself to eat your cravings each and every time, or there's no point in a diet. Also, moderation is key.
The first few bites are to fill your stomach, the rest are just for the pure enjoyment of the taste of food. That saying is what prevents me from going overboard.
I will eat the pizza. It's pretty clean in and of itself- semolina dough, fresh tomato sauce olive oil basil mozz and parm. They make it in front of you, including the dough, so it's "real" food. I just want to get a few weeks under my belt.
I have felt so much better and have been working out in some capacity every day.
I did 10 push ups today- REAL push ups, no knees. I'm not a push up girl, so this was huge.
It may be more mental than anything, but you know what? I'll take it.
