Columbia SON MDE 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to start this thread for those who are all applying to the Columbia School of Nursing MDE program for 2019 Entry.

I figured we could all share our thoughts/ questions/ concerns here, or just use this to meet some new people ?

My name is Gurdeep, I'm from NY, and I'm a recent Grad from Binghamton University. Looking forward to meeting all of you ?

interesting. Thanks so much for the info!

Another question I have is, do you know what sort of extracurriculars nursing students can be involved in? Like are we able to join clubs, help with research, or be TA's etc. or do U think that the program is too rigorous for us to be able to even do any of that?

Thanks.

You will be too busy with your classes to join any extracurriculars. For the first Summer session, we're all just trying to catch up with classes and on sleep ? You will be tired from your clinicals and you'll want to rest instead of cramming up your few extra time with other activities. Most of the graduating students have said they don't start extracurriculars until the 2nd Summer session.

Yea, I was told it was July 1st but still not open. I emailed and they told me they are anticipating to open the app in the next few weeks.

Hey!

Sorry to bother again, I was wondering if you knew of any scholarships that students applied to in the program. I was looking around but wasn't sure which are right for someone looking to go into a program like this one in particular. Or if you know if Columbia offers any, and about how much?

Thanks!

Columbia offered the last cohort $40,000 if you enter the DNP portion right after completing the MDE. For the MDE, I think the max scholarship they gave out was $27,000 but this can change depending on their numbers. The school will tell you, "Everyone can apply to outside scholarships and most our students are fully covered," but that's not true. You'll be too busy and sleep-deprived to think about anything else. The program is very expensive (you'll hear the students complain), so most students don't continue through the DNP.

Wow can you offer some insight into what they possibly look for in admissions. I just feel as though I haven't done enough for the program. I have only 3 pre reqs to complete (which I'm worried about) and I have a few volunteer experiences here and there. I've been a pharmacy tech for 4 years but I always knew I didn't want to do pharmacy. I am trying to shadow an NP now but it's difficult in nyc. Thank you!

Hi everyone ! A little late to the thread, but I am also in the process of applying to Columbias MDE/DNP program. Im currently an undergrad at UCLA and have finished the pre recs last winter. Ive volunteered over 150 hours, am a research assistant in two separate labs, phlebotomy certified, president of the honors society, and apart of a few latino organizations that focus on providing healthcare/ awareness to latino and black communities in Los Angeles.

Hey Everyone,

Im also applying this cycle for the MDE/DNP PMHNP track. I have submitted my application. The video essay question was literally the same one as the mock question. I was expecting something different. So that lowered my nerves a bit. I dressed with a dress shirt and tie, the video is only shoulder and headshot. Did the best I could, spoke about something very personal but important. It asked about an obstacle, how we dealt with it and what we learned from that experience. The timed writing asked about what made us special or unique. I live in South Florida and Columbia is my first choice school. Have a BA in Psychology from UF (Go Gators), and am wrapping up an MPH at University of New England (Go Noreasters lol). I graduate in the Spring. Am only missing the Nutrition pre-req but am trying to see if my biochemistry course would be considered to satisfy that requirement, we covered clinical nutrition on its own within that semester of Biochem. I have a background in medicine, I did some years of medical school in a foreign country (hope this doesnt negatively impact my application). I was able to get the GRE waived because of my undergrad GPA, I read in prior forums that if you choose this option you put the programs deadline as the test date and then 0s in all the other sections. Once submitted you'll notice a red X and this will be lifted once the work study students help review the apps and remove them.

Well everyone it is still early but I really wish every single on of you good luck. I hope many of us get in and we can at least have become acquainted through here initially.

Cheers from Miami!!

Hey Psych NP!

That's awesome to hear that you're applying, and good luck!

Would you let me know if they accept the nutrition prerequisite due to your biochem class! That would definitely help me out as well, haha. Thanks!

Hey there Glal2,

I will most definitely let you and everyone know! In the event that say no, I would see about taking an online course in Nutrition as a non-degree student somewhere. I was looking at the University of South Dakota and it looks like a good course and not too pricey, I also heard that Johns Hopkins has pre-reqs as well. Not sure of pricing though. I know based on Columbia's site we have until May 2019 to wrap up any loose ends, including pre-requisites.
