Columbia SON MDE 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to start this thread for those who are all applying to the Columbia School of Nursing MDE program for 2019 Entry.

I figured we could all share our thoughts/ questions/ concerns here, or just use this to meet some new people ?

My name is Gurdeep, I'm from NY, and I'm a recent Grad from Binghamton University. Looking forward to meeting all of you ?

Do you have any insight as to what we should expect to write about? Also, many schools ask for a general "personal statement" explaining our desire to become a nurse and such. I did not see that on Columbia SON's page. Do these essays take the place of that statement or is that also a requirement? Thank you!

A big disclaimer for the essays: In last year's MDE thread, the essay prompts that were shared with us from the previous year were very different than the ones we got on our actual application. There is a good possibility that they will be different from the ones we got last year. I really wouldn't recommend starting on the prompts until they are official, just so you don't waste your time and energy. These essays will take the place of your traditional "personal statement". I'm not too sure if the 2019 Application has opened yet, but the prompts for the next cycle can only be viewed within their application (they wouldn't be openly posted on their website), so make sure you have an account to see if they've posted it within their application. I'm sorry that I can't provide much more information about that.

No that's very helpful thanks! Just have one more question about the application. Once we begin the process, will we be able to save our input and continue at a different time or does it have to be completed in one shot? To be more specific, with the essay prompts, would we be able to view the question, work on it for some time and then submit at a later time?

NewCna102, Hi!

I actually attended two open houses, they have ones online, and some in person. They were both pretty similar, but I wanted to take a look at the building (which was beautiful BTW.)

However, I spoke to someone at admissions and they said that you are free to come in ( i forget the days and times specifically, but give them a call), and someone there will be able to take the time to speak with you. I don't think they'll be able to show you around, but they definitely will answer any questions you have. I highly recommend attending an open house and asking questions there, The person was very receptive to questions and did not sugar coat any answers.

So I don't think I saved any of my essays onto the application while I was working on them. I copied the prompts onto a Word document and I worked on them on that document. After I completed the essays, I just copied/pasted them onto the website and saved them. I do think that you would be able to save your working essays on the website, but I wouldn't recomment it, just because you may mix up your drafts.

Hi all, I'm relatively new to this process/forum and am considering applying to the MDE program this Fall or Spring. At this point, I need to complete the majority of the pre-requisite courses, and wondered if anyone had advice as far as doing so. Are online courses really acceptable, and if so, which ones are best to consider? I noticed that a number of nursing schools now offer many of the pre-reqs online; is this preferable to taking them online at one of the CUNY schools, for example? Any other advice is much appreciated. I have two small children at home so I'm a bit nervous about potentially doing this. Also, anyone have stats on acceptance rates or have a feel for how competitive these programs are (Columbia and others in the city)?

@TeachEM Hello! Thank you so much for being a resource to us. Do you mind telling us your stats? Like total GPA, Volunteer experience, Work experience, GPA in pre-reqs...etc? I know Columbia looks at everything holistically, but just seeing stats of someone who was accepted would help immensely.

Hey, so I am a little hesitant to share my stats, I'm trying to avoid identifiers and such, just for privacy purposes. But here's a great blog that I used to help me with my applications for Columbia, hopefully this could offer some guidance: sincerelymeagan
